Dalton Schultz is a very good option for the Miami Dolphins in free agency and the price may not be restrictive.

The tight end market has been nearly anemic since the start of free agency. Mike Gesicki, who many thought would easily hit the $15 million mark signed with the Patriots on a deal that includes less than $5 million in guarantees and another $4 million in incentives. All told, a one-year deal that could reach $9.5.

Schultz isn’t the end-all tight end that fans seem to be clamoring for. He is good but he has his limitations and Miami can’t throw out a massive deal to lock him up. The Dolphins are likely going to draft a tight end next month, probably early. They signed Eric Saubert last week who is a workhorse type TE that seems similar to Anthony Fasano.

Does that make Schultz or another TE expendable? No, but it does make the position less of a priority. Schultz, however, is a very good addition that would fit with Miami’s scheme.

If Schultz is too expensive, another young veteran that could help is Irv Smith and Miami should consider kicking these tires. Smith is only 24 years old, still has some growth ahead of him, and could help provide experience to an incoming rookie.
