Miami Dolphins Seven Round Mock

1. Christian Ponder – QB | 6’2” | 229 lbs | FSU |

I think San Diego could be a trade partner with Miami again this year. SD seems to be high on JJ Watt and rumor is NE will take him at 17 and JAX may take him at 16. I don’t think Ponder will slide past Seattle at 25 so this would be a good slot. They could drop back to 18 and pick up SD’s second pick in round two (#61).

I won’t go into detail on Ponder because I think I have done a lot of that already in other post. I am just sold that Ponder would be a great fit for an offense that needs a leader and an identity. IMO his abilities fit the type of offense Miami wants to run, I’d be fine at taking him at #15 but if they can move back a few slots and still get him, it’s even better.

2. Danny Watkins – OG | 6’3” | 310 lbs | Baylor

I have Watkins ranked as the #2 guard in the draft. He is big mean and nasty qualities I love in an offensive lineman. He can play on the right or left side and can also play RT if needed. Line him up next to Long and you have the new WWE tag team champions! LOL

3. DJ Williams – TE | 6’2” | 245 lbs | Arkansas

Miami seems to be showing a lot of interest in Williams. The new offense will be very similar to what New England runs and Williams is almost a mirror image of Hernandez. Miami plays in the AFE East, so 6 games against teams that run a 3-4 scheme. The best way to attack a 3-4 scheme is with an athletic TE. Williams is more of an H-back, but Miami will use motions and shift to get him in mismatches. He’s a good blocker in space where Fasano excels along the line. Williams and Fasano will be a good pairing for Miami t TE.

4. Bilal Powell – RB | 5’11” | 207 lbs | Louisville

Ireland and Sparano were at the Louisville proday. They spent a lot of time with Bilal. Powell runs with power but shows some burst. He is just average in the passing game but shows decent hands on the catches he should make. I think Miami will resign Brown and Brown will become more of the third down back and used more in the passing game.

5. Bruce Miller – DE/OLB | 6’2” | 259 lbs | UCF

Miller is a good option opposite of Wake. He plays on the offensive side of the ball. He was Confernce USA defensive player of the year in 2010, registering 8.5 sacks, 13.5 TFL, 2 ints (both returned for TDs), 2 pass breakups and 18 QB hurries. This kid can plan and can get after the QB. I wouldn’t mind seeing Misi moved inside.

6. Deunta Williams – FS | 6’1” | 215 lbs | UNC

He was caught up in the agent issues and missed the first four games. He them broke his leg in the bowl game and hasn’t been able to workout yet. He has third round talent but the leg and suspension will hurt him. In 2009 he was a ballhawk and had 6 ints, but last year was asked to give more run support due to suspension in the front seven and didn’t register any ints. I think if he’s here in round 6 he would be a steal. He’s has a high football IQ, that made a poor choice off the field. I have liked this guy for a couple of years now and would love to see him in Miami.

7a. Mario Harvey – ILB | 5’11” | 250 lbs | Marshall

I know this guys doesn’t fit the prototypical mold of the LB Parcells likes, but Parcells is gone and I hope Ireland realized fitting a mold isn’t always the best option. This guys nickname is Thumper, that has got to tell you something about him. Like Williams I have liked this guy for a couple of years. He is stout against the run and can get pressure on the QB from the inside as well. He is a 3 year starter and in those three years he has averaged 123 tackles, and 7 sacks. He’s not going to help you in pass coverage, but he can plug the middle and blitx the QB from the inside spot.

 7b. Aldrick Robinson – WR | 5’10” | 182 lbs | SMU

The Dolphins have had meetings with this guy and seem to have interest in him. He is fast as lightning posting a 4.35 at the combine. He is small and doesn’t have the best 10 yard split which is why he is considered a 7th round pick or UFA.

Seriously? You have SD giving up a 2 to move up three spots and then you have us spending our 1 on a guy who will still be there at 2? What you need to do is go Google “NFL draft pck value chart”. It’s not the end all be all but it is what the teams consult to help decide whether to trade a pick.

    • onole1

The draft chart is outdated, been outdated for years. Google is a good tool, you should try it and see what many are saying about Ponder recently. I believe like many that Ponder wont make it out of round one (pick 25 for me) but if he does make it to round 2 he wont get past Cincy.

  • Tommy

I agree with Ranadicus. Plus, we dont need anymore DBs. Id rather take a chance on another O lineman.

I like the trade down, but Miami I believe will draft kaepernick or ponder in the second round and grab a tackle or guard in the first round. Powell with his hamstring problems may drop from the 4th to later in the draft. DJ Williams would be a great addition at TE. Robinson would be a good pickup in round 7.

    • onole1

I hope they don’t draft Kapernick. His big throwing motion scares me. I would rather Miami look at Yates or McElroy in the thrid or fourth.

I like DJ Willimas a lot, he is a missmatch waiting to happen.

What’s up with all these little guy picks at big guy positions?

    • onole1

      Like what?

  • mike

Like your picks and even like Ponder but not at #15 or anywhere in the 1st.

If the NFL and Players can work things out before the draft and open up making deals/free agency, I think the Phins should trade Crowder and Merling, Crowder and rights to Thigpen, or Merling and rights to Thigpen to Cincy for Carson Palmer. Palmer would rather retire than play in Cincy anymore.

Then resign Ronnie Brown and Tony McDaniel.

Trade down in draft to get second rd pick. Then Select:
    1st – WR Torrey Smith
    2nd – C Stefen Wisniewski
    3rd – ILB Kelvin Sheppard
    4th – TE Virgil Green
    5th – G Zach Hurd
    6th – RB Roy Helu
    7th – QB T.J. Yates
7th – CB Ryan Jones or FS Mark LeGree

Imagine Carson Palmer running an offense with WR’s Marshall, Bess, Hartline, and Torrey Smith; TE’s Fasano and Virgil Green; and RB’s Ronnie Brown, Lex Hilliard, Kory Sheets, and Roy Helu with upgraded oline.

I don’t think we would lose much on D with Crowder and/or Merling gone.

    • onole1

I’d love to have Palmer, but I wouldn’t touch Torrey Smith with a 10 foot pole. He is Bey all over again. I like everyone else on your draft and if Miami didn’t end up with Ponder, Yates is the guy I want.

Ponder wont make it past Cincy in round 2, and I really don’t think he makes it out of round 1. He was a first round QB going into the season and the elbow injury dropped him. He has shown the elbow (which was misdiagnosed) is 100% and the arm strength he showed in 2009 in back. Scouts love his football and general IQ and his leadership. I really don’t think he gets past Seattle at #25.

  • Reacher

My favorite mock draft this year, would be great if miami follows your mock.

  • Lothar

Mario Harvey! Saw him play a couple games this year and love his motor. It would be great to pick him up even as early as the fifth round. NFLdraftscout still has him ranked as the #12 ilb overall. Anybody know if the Phins were at Marshall’s pro day this week?

  • Ian

I like this mock, but I don’t want Ponder. He’s just another Pennington with below NFL average arm strength. If we trade down, I would rather see Mallett/Pouncey in the first round and taking Andy Dalton / top OG in the 2nd. Completion % is a completely underappreciated stat and Dalton/Mallett are the tops in that category.

  • Reacher

what do you think about this mock :

    1.QB Christian Ponder
2.RB Mikel LeShoure or RB Ryan Williams
    3.OG William Rackley
    4.TE Julius Thomas
    5.S Da’Norris Searcy
    6.WR Ricardo Lockette

  • Edub21

I looove ponder and always have. He is going to be a star. FSU was over looked this year by many cause ponder injuries. I just hope he can stay healthy cause he likes to run.
He reminds me a lot of aikman with more mobility. Accuracy mainly. The phins need accuracy if we can get Ingram and ponder I will be stoked!
