No. 1 – Jake Scott
Before Dan Marino, there was another No. 13 on the Miami Dolphins and as it turns out he’s the best individual secondary player in team history.
Scott played alongside Dick Anderson as safeties in the “No Name Defense” and still holds the record for most career interceptions as a Dolphin despite playing in 84 games – significantly less than Anderson, Madison and many others on this list.
Scott has more Pro Bowl appearances than any defensive back in Dolphins history as he received the honor five times from 1971 to 1975. He was also named to the All-Pro First team in 1973 and 1974.
Lastly, but certainly most importantly, Scott was the Super Bowl MVP in 1972. He picked off Washington quarterback Billy Kilmer twice and returned the picks for a combined 62 yards, including a 55 yard return that killed a crucial drive for Washington while they were at the Miami 10 yard line. However, the famous Garo Yepremian field goal turned to pass attempt turned to a fumble gaffe would lead to a Washington touchdown late in the fourth quarter anyway.
Scott put together four more interceptions in the playoffs adding to his already franchise leading regular season amount. He recorded two interceptions in 1971 and 1972.
So while Madison has the longevity, Scott delivered when it mattered most. He put together more turnovers despite playing in 54 less games than Madison. Scott started in every game he appeared in whether it was his rookie season, his time in Miami, or his final three seasons as a pro in Washington.
