DEFENSIVE LINE
The biggest surprise is that the Dolphins believe they have seen enough in C.J. Mosley to warrant a roster spot. Mosley has been largely ineffective this pre-season but will at least get to remain on the roster for now. Anthony Johnson and A.J. Francis were battling for a roster spot and Francis will remain on the team. Johnson was cut on Friday. Even with the release of the promising yet struggling Johnson, the Dolphins boast a deep defensive front that includes Ndamukong Suh, Earl Mitchell, and 2nd round pick Phillip Jordan.
No surprises here at all. None were expected. The Dolphins will remain the same entering the season where Cameron Wake and Olivier Vernon will be backed up by Derrick Shelby and Terrence Fede. The Dolphins ends are high motor players with large expectations this season.
LINEBACKERS
As we move back into the deeper spots on the defense linebacker saw the most change this year. While Jordan Tripps release was somewhat of a mild surprise, given his health issues over two seasons it shouldn’t have been. Tripp was very good on special teams but not as good as Spencer Paysinger who despite a very poor pre-season will remain with the team. In addition the Dolphins have opted to keep un-drafted rookies Zack Vigil and Neville Hewitt. Vigil was expected but Hewitt is a bit of a surprise. The team opted for Hewitt over Tripp, Luc, Davidson, and Mike Hull.
Cornerbacks
The Dolphins biggest question is who plays across from Brent Grimes and then that question turned into who replaces Jamar Taylor while he is injured. Bryce McCain will assume those duties but the Dolphins have stayed thick at cornerback. A Mike Tannenbaum trademark. The Dolphins have opted to keep Tony Lippett, Zach Bowman, Bobby McCain, and Will Davis. Davis was the center of a lot of speculation after it was revealed the Dolphins were shopping him. Some ventured to believe that he would be released if a trade partner could not be found. While he still may have a tough time staying on the roster, he is, for now.
Safeties
We knew that Reshad Jones, Walt Aikens, and Michael Thomas would make the roster. We didn’t know that 5th round pick Cedric Thompson would not make the roster and that Jordan Kovac’s would. That is exactly what happened today. The Dolphins are hoping to stash Thompson on the practice squad but the fact they are keeping Kovacs is a bit surprising. Kovac’s has played well on special teams and it’s likely in that area that he is making the roster.
