Miami Dolphins Grier doesn’t rule out quarterback in 2019 draft
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins will have a need for a quarterback and the question of when the Dolphins would take one is debated. It may happen this year.
Several in the local media have been banging the “tank” drum but none more consistently and regularly than Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald. His take is that the Dolphins are “tanking for Tua” in reference to Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa or maybe Justin Herbert. But the Dolphins are not ruling out a quarterback in this years draft.
Speaking with the media at Brian Flores‘ introductory press conference, Chris Grier was asked about the Dolphins and not drafting a quarterback in 2019.
(As far as what type of job he’s taking, it has been reported the last couple weeks you weren’t going to take a quarterback this year. Is that accurate?)
"– “No, nothing is out … You can’t say that, because we haven’t even gone through our process of getting to learn the guys yet. There’s a lot of good prospects we spent some time with down at the Senior Bowl and there’s other quarterbacks that weren’t there that people are talking about as well. We’ve just got to go through it and get to know them. We might get through the process and fall in love with a couple guys. Last year, we liked two guys a lot and they both had good success this year. It could be at that point we may say, ‘We feel this is the guy.’” – MiamiDolphins.com"
It is an interesting take considering there has been speculation that the Dolphins will build from the inside out. This is of course not saying that Miami would spend a first round pick on a quarterback but it also doesn’t rule it out either. I know some friends on Twitter that will be thrilled with the prospect of Kyler Murray.
The Dolphins are not going to tank but one thins is certain, a lot can change with a quarterback who can make the throws. If the Dolphins were to draft the right quarterback this year, a lof of problems would be solved. They would still need to fix the rest of the roster.
Grier’s approach is almost simplistic, get players with a broader goal in mind instead of fixating on a position or ruling one out. Under Mike Tannenbaum it seemed as though the Dolphins were drafting names at times without a clear identification of how they might fit within the roster. For as promising as Minkah Fitzpatrick is, he kind of fits that mold and frankly Matt Burke had no idea how to use him.
The process that Grier is talking about is starting now that Flores is assembling his staff and the two can begin their evaluations of the roster. Changes are coming but to what degree we simply do not know just yet.
