Miami could target former 2017 #1 recruit late in the first round

Scouting Report. Miami (FL). . player. 834. Pick Analysis. EDGE. JaelanPhillips

Gregory Rousseau’s opt-out was a blessing in disguise for Jaelan Phillips, who arguably had one of the best 2020 college football seasons for any draft prospect. Phillips, the former number one overall recruit in the class of 2017, transferred from UCLA to Miami after citing he needed a change of scenery.

Based on measurables, 6-foot-5 255 Lbs, and the fact that he was so dominant in high school, Phillips would have likely ended up as a late-round pick regardless. But, in his single season at Miami, he showcased why he was considered the top recruit in the nation at one point and why he deserves to be a first-round pick.

Lining up across another early-round pick in Quincy Roche, Phillips put together an impressive 2020 season with 8 sacks, 1 interception, and 3 pass deflections. While it wasn’t the mind-boggling numbers Rosseau put together in 2019, Phillips showcased his talent and proved he could be an elite player after dealing with injuries at UCLA.

Phillips does not have the same physical skill set as Rosseau, but in the right system could be a dominant player. Equally, the Dolphins could target him in the late first round with the 18th overall pick, or even moving back a few spots.
