Miami Dolphins: Ranking all 9 positions from worst to first
5. Quarterbacks
We all know the story about Tua Tagovailoa and how much he has to prove in his second season under center for the Dolphins. If he can live up to the billing of being a top-5 pick, then Miami will be a Super Bowl contender not only this season, but for years to come as well.
It is the players behind Tagovailoa on the depth chart, however, that make the quarterback unit an above average one no matter Tua’s development. Having an experienced and reliable backup QB has never been more important, and the Dolphins have just that. Jacoby Brissett has started 32 games over the course of his career, and has put up acceptable numbers despite an ugly win/loss record as a starter. Should there be any sort of COVID-19 outbreak and Tagovailoa is affected, Brissett will become a very important piece.
And while he did not make the active roster, Reid Sinnett is back on the practice squad after an impressive showing throughout camp and in exhibitions. He threw for a whopping 343 yards in the Dolphins’ final preseason game, including a miracle last-minute touchdown pass that won Miami the game and made for an exciting highlight. The Dolphins will likely be in trouble if Sinnett is to take the field at any point this season, but that is solely based on our expectations for Tagovailoa. You could do far worse than Reid Sinnett as your practice squad quarterback.
4. Tight ends
The Dolphins’ tight ends make up one of the best units on the entire team, though their future beyond this season is unknown.
The crown jewel of the TE room is Mike Gesicki, who enjoyed something of a breakout season last year and has the potential to be a top-5 tight end in the league if he continues his improvement. But his contract expires at the end of the season, and Gesicki could be owed a big pay day that the Dolphins simply can not afford. Durham Smythe, their best blocking tight end, will be a free agent next off season as well, leaving a couple of unproven commodities and Adam Shaheen.
But with all of those guys on the depth chart, this unit should be one of the strongest on the team. So much as been made about the new wide receivers on the roster, but the tight ends could end up being the most important pass catchers. The chemistry between Gesicki and Tagovailoa that we saw begin to develop last season should only improve with further reps.
