Miami Dolphins: 3 things to watch for in preseason Week 2 game
What to watch in Miami Dolphins preseason Week 2:
Which back-end WR makes a case for himself?
One of the most interesting positional battles during training camp for the Dolphins is taking place at the wide receiver position. There is obviously a definitive top 3 in Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and Cedrick Wilson Jr., but just who wins the fourth (and fifth) wideout spots is still up for heavy debate.
The list of players vying for the spots is long and talented. Rookie 4th round pick Erik Ezukanma figures to make the roster, given his draft position as well as his solid showing in the early weeks of training camp. Whether he’ll be in the 4th or 5th spot is a question. Ezukanma will be competing against Preston Williams, Trent Sherfield, Lynn Bowden Jr., Mohamed Sanu, and Braylon Sanders.
By way of my quick and excellent math skills, that means that there are five guys vying for one roster spot (maybe two if McDaniel and company work some interesting roster magic), with all except perhaps Sanu having a solid case. Williams has reportedly struggled through the first three weeks of camp and has voiced his frustrations both in front of the cameras and on social media. Sherfield has a history with McDaniel and familiarity with the system, and Sanders has turned heads with some nice plays in front of the fans and media.
And then there is Bowden Jr., who caught three balls for 55 yards and a touchdown in Miami’s preseason Week 1 victory over the Buccaneers. He displayed solid route running and had a nice rapport with Skylar Thompson, who was under center the entire game. If Bowden is able to have that type of connection with the third-string quarterback, then imagine how useful he could be catching passes from the guy that he has been training with all off-season.
Which one of all of these guys makes the best case for himself for a final roster spot? They’ll have to outdo Bowden Jr. this Saturday against the Raiders.
