So who’s available to take this defense to the next level, let’s start with the obvious choice.  Vic Fangio is the best available defensive coach on the market.  Let’s be honest with each other, there were rumors circulating that McDaniel wanted Fangio when he first signed to be the Head Coach but later determined that keeping his own would be the best option.

Fangio is everything you want the Dolphins defense to become. His ties with Baltimore Ravens where he lead the development of Ray Lewis, to working with Jim Harbaugh at Stanford and then again when they both left the collegiate system to rejoin the NFL.  His re-emergence within the NFL, especially what he did with the 49ers’ defense (league-high 35 takeaways led the NFL) and the Chicago Bears (from 30th overall to top 10 in his last year).

His tenure with the Broncos, his first head coaching gig, was exactly what you have expected.  A playoff caliber defense, but a questionable quarterback -sounds familiar to Dolphin fans?   The Broncos lost games because they couldn’t score points, but they had a defense that could play with anyone on Sunday.  Bradley Chubb, could potentially be in the ear of McDaniel and Grier on how this coach can take Miami to the next level.

Fangio’s defensive mindset would be similar to what the Dolphins already have, as such there wouldn’t be a drastic change or shift in player personnel.  The only risk with this type of hiring is that if Fangio delivers a top-ten defense in Miami, he will 100% be a head coach target, so this marriage between Fangio and the Dolphins could potentially be a one-year play, but the risk is definitely worth the reward.
