3 tight ends I’d love the Miami Dolphins to do their homework on

The Miami Dolphins will have a need at tight end this year and there are options on the free-agent market.

With the NFL season coming to a close a few days ago, I guess it’s time to let the NFL rest a little bit. I guess it’s time to start watching other sports and not even think about the NFL until, I don’t know, maybe March?

What a crazy world that would be am I right? Imagine not talking about the NFL or the Miami Dolphins and everything that may or may not happen with the Miami Dolphins for even a day. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t fill up your time with some other productive activities but let’s not act like we aren’t going to be putting our GM hats on and play fantasy general manager for the next few months.

The Miami Dolphins have several units on the team that need an upgrade and I am here to get it going starting with the tight end room.

The tight ends were as nonexistent as the news is in talking about what’s going on in Ohio with that chemical fire. We had this utopian idea that Mike McDaneil was going to bring to Miami what we saw in San Francisco. We thought we were going to see a tight end going down the seams, taking short throws a long way and instead we got Mike Gesicki catching one pass for 6 yards and getting tackled immediately every few weeks.

The biggest reason for this happening was that Mike Gesicki isn’t anywhere near the type of player Gerog Kittle is. Not saying Gesicki can’t be productive in this league. He was productive in Miami for the previous two seasons. But McDaniel needed a tight end that can also be a threat to block on the line of scrimmage. This is something Mike Gesicki simply can’t do and since he couldn’t do it, McDaniel decided that having him out there was pointless because everyone knew the Dolphins weren’t running it.

Needless to say, Mike Gesicki will not be on the Miami Dolphins next year. Pains me to say it because I really wanted Miami to draft him when they did and I really enjoyed watching him do his thing. But reality is often disappointing and I know that there is zero chance Gesicki is back next year.

This means the Miami Dolphins will need to replace him with someone. I really don’t think that Chris Grier is going to break the bank for a tight end especially when they have Hill and Waddle. Also, a bunch more of the young, core player contracts are going to be coming up. All this leads me to believe that a middle-of-the-road tight end who is serviceable to solid will be the kind of guy they go after.

I wouldn’t be shocked if they look to the draft to bolster the position as well. We’ll talk about that more when the combine starts in a few weeks.

I have some ideas of who the Miami Dolphins should be investigating to fill the void left by the future departure of Gesicki. The tight end position isn’t one that needs to be forgotten about just because Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle are the focal points of the offense. This offense doesn’t need a Geroge Kittle type that commands that much volume but it needs someone that can stay on the field for all downs. Here’s the list.
