Miami Dolphins All Over Day 1 Draft
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins are all over the place when you start talking about what they will do on day one of the draft. If you figure they can be mocked in so many ways in round one, then rounds two and three make it even harder.

I threw out the visits a long time ago. The reality is that while some sites let you know each and every player visit that Miami sets up there is nothing to indicate that Miami is truly interested in that player. Last year the Dolphins didn’t draft anyone they hosted. Sure the draft choices of other teams make that impossible to predict but there is a method behind Dennis Hickey’s madness. That method leads us to what are their plans on that first Thursday night.
From wide-receiver to running back, the Dolphins have a lot of options and more than enough holes they need to fill. The Dolphins could easily take a chance on a guy like Todd Gurley the beast mode running back from Georgia. Gurley would be a top 10 pick if not for his ACL injury a year ago.
Wide-receiver is the popular choice in mock drafts and media talk. It’s easy to see why. The Dolphins jettisoned Brian Hartline, Mike Wallace, and Brandon Gibson while bringing on board Kenny Stills. DeVante Parker is a popular name at 14 but Dorial Green-Beckham, Philip Dorsett, Jaelen Strong, Breshad Perriman, and Devin Smith are all possibilities on the first two days of the draft.
Wide-receiver is going to get a lot of play as the draft gets closer. We already know that the Dolphins offered Michael Crabtree three million for a year but was turned down because he wants over $4.5 a year. The fact Miami is willing to offer three makes the reality of a wide-receiver on day one or two more than just a possibility.
If it were that easy we would be done. The Dolphins are also said to be interested in a guard or tackle. Brandon Scherff is expected to be gone by 14 but Miami University lineman Ereck Flowers is not. Many believe Flowers is a late first round pick or a mid-round pick so that brings up the possibility of the Dolphins trading down.
The Dolphins are not going to trade down to get Flowers but trading down is a possibility for Dennis Hickey. The team has already said they would like to recoup the 3rd round pick they moved to New Orleans for Stills. That requires trading players or picks. The Dolphins don’t have a player they could trade for that kind of value but they could trade a pick to slide down and still get a player they value.

Linebacker is still a need as well and while the Dolphins seem content on giving Koa Misi another shot at middle linebacker this season there is no guarantee that will be the case. Cornerback could also be the direction with Trae Waynes a mocked candidate to Miami.
At this point nothing seems un-plausible. It’s all smoke and mirrors and the Dolphins are not going to tip their hand. Of course they may and likely are tipping interest in different directions to make everyone look one way while they are looking the other. Lets all just hope that we are not in for another Ted Ginn day one surprise.
Of course with all the talk of taking this player or that player or trading down, the Dolphins may very well be putting themselves in a position to trade up. Stranger things have happened.
