Miami Dolphins Using Players To Recruit La’el Collins
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins have probably spoken with the agent for La’el Collins. The NFL says that teams can not meet with rookies, un-drafted or drafted, at their school or in their homes until after the graduating classes finals, are well final. For LSU that puts Collins in kind of a no-touch mode until around May 9th.
While the teams can’t officially meet with a player, not sure how Rex Ryan supposedly has already, players can and the Dolphins are asking for a little bit of help from three former LSU players.
According to Fox 8 New Orleans, Kelvin Sheppard, Jarvis Landry, and Anthony Johnson are heading down to Baton Rouge on a non-official recruiting trip. It was reported that head coach Joe Philbin also was heading down but Collins’ agent is saying that he has not met and will not meet with any teams just yet.
The Dolphins have a huge need at guard and Collins would almost assuredly be a day one starter for the club. There are limitations on what the Dolphins can pay Collins under the current CBA rookie allotments. The good news is that every team is hampered by the same number and the same ceiling so a bidding war will not be taking place. In the “all’s fair in war” mantra it’s going to be a matter of who can convince Collins that he has a change to start, and by doing so make more money.

In Miami he would likely start and thus likely be eligible for the NFL payouts for players who outperform their salaries. In addition the playing time immediately makes his stock go up in another two years when he can restructure his deal and sign an extension. Finally the lack of state income tax means more money in his pocket directly.
Whether Miami lands Collins or not, it sounds like it won’t be for a lack of trying.
