Billy Turner Takes RG On Miami Dolphins Line
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins will not release a depth chart until the second week of training camp but according to media reports, Billy Turner has the right guard position to lose. Is that good news or bad news? Hard to say but the offensive line has been something of a quagmire this off-season and it’s likely that the line will be the biggest story heading into camp and into the season.

With Turner, according to the Palm Beach Post, taking the reps during the first week of OTA’s and heading into the 2nd week, his main competition, Dallas Thomas is competing elsewhere. Andrew Abramson of the Post reports that Thomas is now competing with rookie Jamil Douglas at left guard. With questions still lingering over the return of left tackle Branden Albert, having Thomas being considered on the left side is scary.
Turner has one game under his belt as he spent much of last season inactive or injured. He is considered a player with high potential but to be honest he is a completely unknown commodity at this point. The Dolphins however are banking on this potential opting to not address the guard positions in free agency and only in round four of this past years draft with the aforementioned Douglas.
Miami has a lot riding on this season and a lot of money tied up into contracts for a win now approach yet the most critical part of the team has only been fixed with what could be a bandaid. Like Tony Sparano and Cam Cameron, Joe Philbin has yet to fix the offensive line in his first three seasons with the team. His job could be on the line if that trend continues into year four.
The offensive line struggled last week during OTA’s but the reality is that without contact and padding an offensive lineman is nothing more than a space filler. The real test for this team and particularly that unit will come in late July early August when the pads go on and contact begins. Then we will finally get to see if Billy Turner can live up to the hype the team has dished up on him.
