Miami Dolphins training camp: Quarterbacks
By Brian Miller
The Miami Dolphins are off today but they have completed a total of four practices thus far through training camp. Two of which were full pads. So how are they fairing thus far? It’s easy to imagine that the Dolphins offense is clicking along but that is usually not the case early in camp and this year appears to be no different.

Four quarterbacks are currently getting time to showcase what they have. The Dolphins are still using the split field practice system that allows the coaches to simply turn around and watch another unit after the other unit has completed it’s play. It gives the Dolphins a better idea of what each player is doing without the need to wait around on the sidelines. It also gives the Dolphins the much needed tempo practice to get more reps.
Ryan Tannehill
Thus far Tannehill has looked sharp. While he has thrown some interceptions including a would be 95 yard touchdown return, he has also hit 30 yard completions. Tannehill hasn’t broken open the long ball yet but Kenny Stills has been nursing a nagging injury that has him limited thus far. Tannehill is showing a lot of control over his throws threw the first four days and should continue to get better as the camp continues.
Matt Moore
Moore had a good first day in pads but didn’t look the same the next day when he threw a couple of picks. Moore does however hold this weeks top highlight of a deep pass on the money to Michael Preston. Moore is a capable back-up who in practice takes more risks than necessary but it’s early in camp and he too is finding his connections with the new receivers.
Josh Freeman
Freeman has been very quiet through the first four days as it seems that McLeod Bethel-Thompson has taken more reps. When Freeman has been in he has been better than some expected but it’s still an uphill battle for him to make the roster as the Dolphins will likely carry only two into the season. Freeman is hoping to get extended looks in pre-season where he hopes to show other NFL teams that he can still play.
McLeod Bethel-Thompson
MBT has made some nice throws but so far he has been more off than on. He has multiple interceptions thrown and has sailed a few passes as well. Overall it’s looking like his best chance is another stint on the teams practice squad. He just isn’t quite there yet and needs a lot more work.
Overall
The first two units are looking like they are on the right pace this early in camp and some will say they look better than expected given the nature of the defense they are facing. Tannehill is looking sharp most of the time and that is good news for the franchise who just gave him a big contract extension. Moore is exactly what a back-up should be and he shows no signs of losing that job. As the weeks progress more focus will be given to the QB spots but for now most of the attention is on an offensive line that has created little time and given up what would be sacks. Until that line is fixed we won’t know exactly what either top two QB’s will have in store.
Perhaps the biggest thing to say about the first four days is that neither Matt Moore or starter Ryan Tannehill have given fans any reason to worry about the upcoming season.
