The Miami Dolphins haven’t quite finished tinkering with their roster but today’s news is actually good news for the team. The Dolphins, according to reports are promoting running back Jonas Gray to the 53 man roster as well as center/guard Sam Brenner.

Brenner was released on Saturday as the team trimmed to 53 but was added to the practice squad on Sunday. There is no word as to whether another team was trying to poach Brenner from the squad. Th Dolphins will release back-up center Jacques McClendon to make room for Brenner on the 53. Brenner is a valuable back-up who showed a lot of growth this past off-season and was one of the more consistent lineman through pre-season taking snaps at both guard and center.

To make room for newly acquired running back Jonas Gray the Dolphins are releasing third team quarterback Logan Thomas. Thomas who was released by Arizona after one season may be a candidate for the teams practice squad.

Gray played well last season in his first real NFL action while with the New England Patriots. A hard running North and South back, Gray will give the Dolphins a short yardage back that they currently lack. On Sunday barring any unforeseen changes, the Dolphins will enter Washington with Lamar Miller, Damien Williams, LaMike James, and Gray giving them four backs on the active 53. It’s hard to believe any of those backs will be inactive although it’s very possible that Gray will be.

The Dolphins also have rookie Jay Ajayi on short term IR.

NFL rules state that vested veterans are guaranteed their salaries if on the roster of a team the day before the first game of the season. In this case McClendon’s salary would have been guaranteed if on the roster tomorrow. Thomas’ salary was not.
