The Miami Dolphins are scheduling coaches to come in for interviews this week. Dan Campbell will get his shot on Friday.

Dan Campbell finished the season at 5-7. That’s not bad considering he took over a 1-4 team that was in total dissaray but is it enough to hire him as the full time permanent head coach? Not likely but he will get his chance on Friday to lay out his plans to the Dolphins hiring committee.

What Campbell needs to do this week is make phone calls. Lots of phone calls. He needs to turn over every rock in the hopes of being able to present coaching assistants to the group on Friday. The Dolphins know what they have in Campbell and he fits every check box Miami has going into their coaching search. What he doesn’t have is the experience and the coaching tree to pick from.

It’s likely that Campbell will call on Bill Parcells. Parcells has a laundry list of coaches that Campbell could contact but he will need to be a salesman to land them. Campbell has two things going for him right now. The committee that he will interview with love him. That would be Stephen Ross, Chris Grier, Mike Tannenbaum, Tom Garfinkel, and Dawn Aponte. He also has the full support of the players in the locker room.

Following Sunday’s win, Stephen Ross addressed the team and was showered with chants of “Campbell”. That has to sit in Ross’ head. Ross however needs his next coach to be a winner and he has to be the right choice. Campbell would be ideal if he had more experience. Unfortunately, Campbell has only been coaching full time since 2012 as a tight-ends coach.

The fact Miami is giving him the chance to interview is enough for Campbell. At least right now. Speaking with the media post-game on Sunday, he said he was thrilled to have the chance to interview and now he knows when that will take place.

Ahead of him though is Mike Shanahan, Teryl Austin, and Adam Gase. Rumors continue to swirl about Gase being the Dolphins top choice. Whoever the top choice is he would be wise to retain Campbell on staff. Miami would be smart to push the issues as much as they can without alienating the next head coach.

The wheels in Miami are turning and this week should be an interesting one to say the least.
