Miami went into their coaching search with Gase at the top of Stephen Ross’ wish list. He finally get’s his first guy on the third try. Gase comes to Miami as one of the most respected head coaching candidates in recent years. His work with Peyton Manning in Denver and Jay Cutler in Chicago has been noteworthy but his work with Tim Tebow in a single season with Denver stands out more.
Gase will now have to retool Ryan Tannehill.
With Gase now the head coach the staff become the next priority. We should know more about this in the coming days and the Dolphins will likely hold a press conference to introduce him in the next two days but no later than Monday I would assume.
Many have compared Gase to Joe Philbin and that is not really fair. In fact you can read Matt Cannata’s take on this here. It’s a good solid read. The Dolphins have their man but they have a lot of work to do between now and the start of the league new year in March. Gase will need to hire his staff, evaluate the staff still on the roster, and then evaluate the players on the roster as well.
Mike Tannenbaum will maintain control over the players and personnel but Gase will have a chance to look the roster over and make his own suggestions. The Dolphins will also have to deal with the salary cap issues as well and tough decisions will be coming in the next two months with several players. How much of an influence Gase will have will be determined later but it’s likely going to be an all-around front office decision/s.
Gase will also have to decide what to do with interim head coach Dan Campbell. Campbell is very respected in the Dolphins locker room and keeping him on staff could help the transition but will Campbell agree to go back and coach tight-ends or will expect a higher position? There is also a need to keep special teams coach Darren Rizzi but Rizzi currently has an assistant head coach title. Will Gase keep him in place as well?
Those are some of the short term problems that Gase will face as he gets his feet wet in Miami. Regardless of whether we believe Gase is the right choice he is now THE choice and it’s time to get behind him and see what he can do. With all of our fingers and toes crossed.
