The Miami Dolphins don’t “need” a quarterback in free agency this year but they do need a back-up if they don’t re-sign impending free agent Matt Moore. With free agency now down to a little over a week, the Dolphins will get to work on their roster sooner rather than later.

Matt Moore is a question mark for more than one reason, he hasn’t shown that he can be very good when given the chance to play. Miami fans have not seen him in game situations for a long time but they have seen him in pre-season and practices and he has not been sharp. Still, Moore has been a fixture at the Dolphins facility and has provided leadership from the sidelines and the Dolphins will or should seriously look at him for another deal.

Barring that new deal which is about 50/50 right now Miami has other options in the free agent market. Here are the top 10 quarterbacks that Miami could take a look at when the market opens on March 9th, minus the quarterbacks who will be looking at starting salaries.

Chase Daniels – Kansas City. The Chiefs would like to keep Daniels but it’s unknown if they will. Daniels has potential but he doesn’t have a large NFL resume to flaunt to prospective teams.

Drew Stanton – Arizona. The Cardinals added Stanton as a back-up and he didn’t play poorly when called into action. He will not receive much interest from teams needing a starting quarterback.

Matt Schaub – Baltimore. Schaub’s days as a starter are over but he has starting experience that could benefit Miami if they opt to not keep Moore. It would allow the Dolphins another year to figure out their entire quarterback unit.

Luke McCown – New Orleans. Like the others, McCown is not going to see starting offers but teams in need of a reliable back-up with a lot of experience may look his way.

Case Keenum – Los Angeles. There is some potential here with the right system and coach.

Thaddeus Lewis– Eagles.  Lewis torched the Dolphins two seasons ago and was relegated to a back-up role afterwards. The Bills sent him out of Buffalo and he was a back-up in Philadelphia last year.

Pat Devlin – Cleveland. Devlin has been on the Dolphins roster before but that was under a different coach. Still he has some talent and as a back-up provides a younger option for the Dolphins and likely cheaper one to back-up Tannehill.

Brandon Weeden – Houston. Weeden has bounced all around the NFL since his arrival in 2012 as a first round pick by the Browns. He has spent time with Dallas as well. Weeden isn’t a starter but he is an option to back-up.

Matt McGloin – Raiders. McGloin has spent time behind Derek Carr but was supposed to become a starter. He never did. His future now is as a back-up.

Scott Tolzien – Green Bay. The upside is that he has spent a lot of time learning from Aaron Rodgers, the downside is he hasn’t been on the field all that much.
