The end of an era is reportedly coming on Monday when future Hall of Fame quarterback and defending Champion Peyton Manning retires. Looking back at the career of Manning vs. the Miami Dolphins is an interesting one.

More from Dolphins News

When Manning entered the NFL way back in 1998 the Indianapolis Colts selected Peyton Manning with their first pick in the draft, the number one pick. Back then the Colts still played in the AFC East and the Miami Dolphins faced Manning twice a year. Dan Marino was at the end of his career and when the Houston Texans became an NFL franchise the NFL realigned the divisions and the Colts became part of the AFC South.

Manning would only play the Dolphins five times as division rivals. The NFL moved the club in 2001 prior to the start of the season. In his career, Mannning actually holds a losing record to the Dolphins. 6-7, including playoffs it’s 6-8. In fact, throughout his career, he only has a losing record to the Seahawks, Packers, Patriots, Dolphins, and Colts. Only New England has a margin greater than one game.

The Dolphins always played Manning well holding him to an 84 passer rating and forcing a 22-18 touchdown to interception ration. His longest career touchdown pass against the Dolphins was 80 yards. Manning only averaged 7.3 yards per pass attempt against the Dolphins completing 62% of his passes against the Dolphins defense. But he threw for over 3,200 yards.

As Manning gets ready to call it a career it’s easy to look back now and marvel at the player he became. He was one of the first to break many of Dan Marino’s records. Playing in an era where passing became much easier but he consistently found ways to lead. In 2012 the Dolphins tried unsuccessfully to lure Manning to Miami when he was released by the Colts. He chose the Broncos and turned their franchise into a winner.

For the Dolphins, Manning won’t be missed simply because Miami didn’t face him enough to really develop a rivalry between the two the clubs. Manning’s last game against Miami was a come from behind victory last year with the Broncos when he threw four touchdown passes, two of them late in the game to beat the Dolphins.

As an NFL fan it will be an ending to an era that is rarely seen anymore in the NFL.
