Alonso, a linebacker, is entering the final year of his rookie contract and will make just under $1 million in 2016 barring a new deal from the Dolphins. Miami is in dire need of upgrading both linebacker and cornerback. The question everyone is asking is what’s the price?
The Dolphins will obviously give up a draft pick or two draft picks to make the trade. Mike Tannenbaum is no stranger to selling picks for players. Something he did often while the GM in New York with the Jets. Alonso joined the Eagles last off-season as part of a trade with the Bills for LeSean McCoy.
The Eagles appear to be jettisoning players from the Chip Kelly years which makes this little surprise. Alonso has tremendous upside and had a stellar rookie season before injuring his ACL two seasons ago. In Miami he would be an immediate upgrade over Kelvin Sheppard.
Both players will make the Dolphins stronger. While Maxwell’s contract is extremely hard to stomach, the Dolphins believe that returning him to a zone defensive scheme, like he stood out in with Seattle, will eleminate the need for one of the corner back spots. The Dolphins will create another when they release Brent Grimes.
The Dolphins are making bold moves ahead of free agency but how those moves translate to the field is another questions. Dolphins fans have seen this before with nothing productive on the field. Adam Gase is getting turnover on a roster that he inherited so it will be interesting to see if he can get his type of players, whatever exactly those are, to perform and make the franchsie successful.
When and if the trade goes through, it will be a big one for the Dolphins. At least for now, on paper.
UPDATE: According to report both Alonso and Maxwell have been informed that they have been traded.
