The Dolphins and Eagles reached and agreement yesterday that would send corner Byron Maxwell and linebacker Kiko Alonso to the Dolphins for a myriad of rumored compensation. That deal was struck down this morning when it was reported that Maxwell could not pass his physical. Now it appears that deal is back on.
Keels who represents Maxwell is calling the trade “back on” but the Dolphins have not made any comments about the deal yet. Rumors have ranged from a swap of 1st round picks, Miami has the 8th and the Eagles have the 13th to a swap of firsts and the Eagles 4th round pick, to a swap of firsts and the Dolphins 4th rounder. A swap of firsts seems to be the common opinion however.
The Dolphins will need to restructure the enormous 2017 portion of Maxwell’s contract. He will cound around $9.5 million against this years cap.
Earlier Omar Kelly via Twitter told his followers that Brent Grimes was demanding his release and another member of the local media said via the social network that the Dolphins will part ways with Grimes due to “personal concerns”. In other words the mouth of Brent Grimes’ wife.
It’s looking more and more like this trade will indeed happen and Grimes’ release should come shortly thereafter if not before the 4:00 p.m. start to free agency.
UPDATE: my how fast things move. The trade is definitely on according to a Dolphins source. Compensation is still unknown but it is indeed believed to be a swap of first round picks. Miami will move from 8 to 13.
Seriously this all feels like one of those apocolypse movies that start off with news blurbs. The Dolphins traded with the Eagles. The deal is off. Dolphins rescind transition tag. Deal with Eagles back on. World grain stores are dwindling. A comet strikes northern Russia.
