The Miami Dolphins are not done with their defensive end search and will host former Rams DE Roberty Ayers today.

More from Dolphins News

When the Dolphins allowed Olivier Vernon to enter free agency it created a hole at the DE position. Sure they filled it partially with Mario Williams but Cam Wake is more suited as a 3rd down specialist these days. So the Dolphins need to find someone who can rotate and be effective against the run.

Enter Robert Ayers.

Ayers finished the 2015 season as one of the best defensive ends in the NFL. Profootballfocus.com ranked him as the 8th best DE in the league. Grading him 88.5 overall. Ayers was very good in pass rush and was solid against the run where he graded 76.7. The Dolphins had one of the worst rushing defenses the first half of the season.

The Dolphins had hoped to lure Rams end, William Hayes but Hayes turned down the Dolphins offer to stay with the Rams. Ayers is a solid player but is entering the final years of his career. He would provide the Dolphins a two down edge defender who can also spell Williams as he can play both sides. Ayers had his best season with the Giants in 2015 but his previous seasons were average.

The Dolphins will host Ayers today according to reports. He will first meet with the Tampa Bay Buc’s before traveling to Miami.

Jones would add additional depth but would not likely have the impact that Ayers would on the roster. Miami is playing it far more safe this off-season than the previous three.
