The Miami Dolphins have the 13th pick in this years draft. Salt over the shoulder, knock on wood three times, kill a cat. 13 has been an unlucky number for many and the Dolphins draft history at the number has been average.

In the last 50 years the Dolphins have held the 13th overall pick only two times. In 1977 the Dolphins selected A.J. Duhe. Duhe had a very good career with the Dolphins until injuries shortened his career to eight seasons. In 1981 the Dolphins selected running back David Overstreet.
Overstreet had all the tools to be a very good runner in the NFL and the Dolphins expected him to become a major force on their offense. Overstreet opted to sign with the CFL after a contract dispute with the Dolphins. In 1983 he joined the Dolphins. His first year in the CFL was solid as he posted almost 1,000 yards on the ground. Overstreet ran for just over 300 yards with the Dolphins but was killed in a car accident in the off-season.
The Dolphins have had luck however in and around the 13th pick. Here is a look at the draft selections made by the team between 10 and 16.
Jackie Shipp – linebacker 1984 – pick 14. Shipp spent most of his 8 year career with the Dolphins playing one season for the Raiders. He was solid but never reached his potential and never started a full season at his position.
John Bosa – DL – 1987 pick 16. There is an irony to this years draft in that John Bosa’s son Joey is one of the top defensive players in this years draft but the Dolphins hopes of John becoming great was short lived. Bosa was a big draft mistake for the Dolphins.
Eric Kumerow – DL – 1988 – pick 16. The Dolphins tried in vane to fix their defensive line and for the 2nd year in a row completely missed on a prospect. Kumerow was a major bust for the Dolphins. Another irony, Kumerow’s sister Cheryl married John Bosa and is the mother of Joey.
Yatil Green – WR – 1997 – Pick 15. Green had the size and speed to be an elite receiver in the NFL but he injured his knee in his first off-season and never fully recovered. He suffered a torn ACL in his first practice in 1997 and then again in 1998. He played one season, 1999 and caught 18 passes. He didn’t play in the NFL again.
Jason Allen – DB – 2006 – pick 16. Allen played four seasons for the Dolphins for the Dolphins but never came close to reaching his first round draft status. Allen was heavily recruited at the college level by Nick Saban but he signed elsewhere. Saban’s teams played against Allen and when Saban came to the NFL he finally got the player he had been trying to get for years. He never lived up to that devotion by Saban.
Mike Pouncey – C – 2011 – pick 16. Pouncey has made the pro-bowl in all but one of his NFL seasons thus far. He has been a staple on the Dolphins offensive line since joining the club but has had issues with injuries. Pouncey has been the best draft pick in this range for the Dolphins.
DeVante Parker – WR – 2015 – Pick 14. After a slow start to last season Parker finally began to show what he is capable of towards the end of the season. The Dolphins are hoping he will develop into a legit receiving threat as the number one wide-receiver. Now healthy and ready to practice for a full off-season (he missed last year with foot surgery) Parker is poised for a possible breakout season.
The Dolphins have had little success but this is a new regime and management team but will the past repeat itself? We will know later this month.
