While I have never been really a big numbers on the jersey guy since I stopped wearing my number 55 almost two decades ago, I know that many fans look at the numbers as a right of passage and that is definitely true of incoming freshman who want to carry the same number with them into their professional career.
The Dolphins have the numbers assigned and here is a list of who will be wearing what. At least for the time being. As players are released some rookie and some newly added veterans will switch numbers so this entire “numbers game” is at least for now, fluid.
Laremy Tunsil – 67
Dolphins who have worn the number:
No one person wore 67 better than Bob Kuechenberg and Tunsil will have a lot to live up to with the number. The last person to wear the number on the field was Daryn Colledge in 2014.
Xavien Howard – 25
Tim Foley, Louis Oliver, Will Allen, Jimmy Wilson, and Louis Delmas are the most notable to wear the number 25. Louis Oliver was a hard hitter and Tim Foley was a member of the teams Super Bowl teams wrapping a ten year career in 1980. Howard wore number 18 and 4 while at Baylor.
Kenyan Drake – 32
Joe Auer, Tommy Vigorito, Jason Allen. Drake will have an opportunity to carve out his own history with 32. Vigorito wore the number well and Auer scored the very first touchdown in Dolphins history. A 99 yard opening franchise kick-off return.
Leonte Carroo – 88
Jim Mandich and Keith Jackson are the most notable to wear the number. It was last worn in 2012 by Jeron Mastrud. Obviously the number all these years has belong to Mandich. Maybe Carroo will give the number it’s first historical relevance as a wide-receiver.
Jakeem Grant – 19
Do we need to even talk about the history of number 19? Ted Ginn, Jr. Brandon Marshall, Legedu Naane, Armon Binns. Bernie Kosar and Scott Mitchell also wore the number. If I were Grant, I’d try and get a new one.
Jordan Lucas – 21
The last of what remained of Brent Grimes, his number is now gone. Grimes wore the number well enough but no one wore it better than Jim Kiick.
Brandon Doughty – 6
J.P. Losman? Pat White? Ray Lucas? Doughty won’t have to do much to make the number his if he makes the roster and doesn’t change the number.
Thomas Duarte – 83
Vern Den Herder, Wes Welker, and of course Mark Clayton have wore number 83.
Here are the undrafted rookies and the numbers they will be assigned. Tyler Murphy, a futures prospect switched his number from 19 to 16 the same number he wore in Pittsburgh.
