The Miami Dolphins signed their 7th round quarterback and their first round offensive lineman. Now they can cross off both of their 6th round selections.

There was a time only a short five years or so ago that drama played out well into July regarding the signing of draft picks. Now, under the current CBA, a rookie salary structure is in place and due to that cap rookies are signing their first contracts well ahead of training camp. What used to be inevitable yearly holdouts has now turned into what teams can sign their draft pool first. Atlanta was the first this year.

The Dolphins meanwhile still have players left to sign but they are getting that list down considerably. Joining Brandon Doughty and Laremy Tunsil are 6th rounders Jakeem Grant and Jordan Lucas.

Both players signed four year deals, the norm for draft picks taken outside of round one.

Grant is a speedy receiver and return man who stands only 5’6″.  He made a lot of fans happy at his first press conference when he said, “you can’t hit what you can’t catch”. Grant will likely be used almost exclusively on special teams until he gets up to par on the Dolphins offense.

Lucas on the other hand, a cornerback, will also try and make the squad on special teams and provide the Dolphins secondary with a solid depth prospect. Both players are physical on their side of the ball. Lucas, like Grant can play more than one position. He can also line up as a safety, another area Miami needs quality depth at.

With the two 6th rounders now under contract, the Dolphins are left with four remaining from their draft class. 2nd round pick Xavien Howard, 3rd rounder running back Kenyan Drake and 3rd round receiver Leonte Carroo, and 7th round tight-end Thomas Duarte.
