While the Dolphins have a tendency to squirrel away some cap space and parlay it to the next season. They may be looking to add some veteran depth at some positions through free agency signings.
It may be hard to pick the positions they might be seeking and even harder to guess the players they might be after. DB/LB/DE/RB/OL might be a good guess. Looking at players they had brought in and players available is a good start.
Defensive Back: Leon Hall – With only one player (Maxwell) currently on the roster with extensive prior veteran experience. It would suite the team well to make an addition. Hall also has ties with new DC Vance Joseph. Some others with past experience are Chris Culliver (although injured) and Antonio Cromartie (although up in age at 32). There is also S Antrel Rolle who has some ties to Gase in Chicago.
Most other defensive options appear to be of the older variety outside of DE Jason Jones who has met with the team more than once. These others are DT Tony McDaniel, DE Chris Canty, DE/OLB Dwight Freeney, OLB Calvin Pace, and DT Randy Starks. While these players are up in age they could provide good situational / rotational options. DT Dominique Easley might fit into the injured questionable project category.
On the offensive side Matt Slauson (signed with Chargers) is an example of a guard that can be used as a center. The Chargers are said to be using him as a center. Adam Gase has stated concern over having an adequate backup center. Think Jamil Douglas playing center last season.
At running back the team had Arian Foster in back in April. He is still healing but could still sign as did Bushrod. There was speculation that the team had also coveted KC Chiefs Knile Davis. The Chiefs are said to be smitten with Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware so why not try to pry away Jamaal Charles?
Along the same lines of prying away running backs there is the Cowboys who just drafted Ezekiel Elliott. And still have good running backs in Alfred Morris and Darren McFadden. Prying away one of those two backs could be easier than getting Charles.
Adding my own speculation would be Pierre Thomas to add to the cogs that fit the all purpose prototype Gase likes. An even deeper speculation would be with the power option to gain those short yardage downs (remember those?) with someone like John Kuhn.
The Dolphins might be happy seeing what they have so far and want to wait until after OTA’s to then see what players other teams may have cut by then.
