Dolphins’ Stephen Ross stops by practice

You really have to love the dead off-season. These are the days that Stephen Ross walking onto the Miami Dolphins practice field is news.

I’m not a fan of OTA reporting simply because I have learned over the last 10 years that getting excited about players playing very well without pads means nothing to the success of this team.
In fact, while I do listen to all the interviews post-practice, the yearly, “this is really exciting” or “this offense is going to be good” stuff just doesn’t seem to resonate into more wins come the regular season.
All that being said, the Dolphins are on the field and today Ross, Mike Tannenbaum, and Tom Garfinkel walked out onto the field to watch some of the practice. Ross didn’t spend the kind of money he has in recent free agency but he has put all of his faith in Tannenbaum, Chris Grier, and new head coach Adam Gase.
These mini-camps are important don’t get me wrong. Especially when installing new schemes on both sides of the ball but how well those schemes are picked up by the players will be what determines it’s success. The most important part of these camps is to have the players ready to go come training camp in late July through August.
There is some news out of these OTA’s for what it’s worth. There are reports that Jordan Phillips is starting over Earl Mitchell but again, when the pads are on things could be a lot different. Cornerback is interesting because while Byron Maxwell is looking good, the other’s are just o.k. Without pads and contact is it fair to judge anyone at all?
Players can’t touch the quarterback and corners can’t bump the receivers. Tackles can’t hit the defensive ends and so on.
It’s really all about the “I” word which we will not discuss here but let’s face it, you are smart and can figure it out.
