For the second consecutive week the Miami Dolphins will face a rookie quarterback. That quarterback will be Cody Kessler.

Just announced this afternoon that Kessler would be stepping in for the injured Josh McCown who, as we all know, stepped in for the injured Robert Griffin III. Kessler will be the second rookie quarterback to face Miami; Jacoby Brissett filled in for Jimmy Garoppolo after Garoppolo was knocked out of Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury.
Coincidentally, Brissett and Kessler were drafted two picks apart in last Springs NFL draft, Brissett first at 91st overall and Kessler 93rd. Interestingly enough, both are stepping on the field before no. 1 overall pick Jared Goff.
Kessler had a great career at the University of Southern California. In three seasons as the Trojans starter he threw for over 10,000 and 88 touchdowns to just 19 interceptions.
Said to have better accuracy than arm strength, Miami will need to look back on Kessler’s college tape this week to prepare. Although he played in the preseason, the Dolphins coaching staff will need to evaluate more than just those 28 passes he threw.
I do have one piece of advice for head coach Adam Gase: stick the rookie back deep in his own territory.
Both the Cleveland Browns and Dolphins are 0-2 to start the season. Neither team has looked impressive from start to finish this season as the Browns blew a lead against the Baltimore Ravens and Miami fell to 31-3 against the New England Patriots before attempting a late comeback in week two.
An 0-3 start would be devastating to the Dolphins. Miami’s first home game in their renovated Hard Rock Stadium can’t go down as a loss. Especially not to a rookie quarterback and a poor Browns squad.
