It didn’t take long on Sunday for the Miami Dolphins to be linked to Colin Kaepernick as a back-up option with Jay Cutler sidelined.

The Dolphins lost Jay Cutler for what could potentially be 2-3 weeks. Matt Moore will assume the starting role until Cutler is healthy and maybe longer. The problem however lies with what is behind Moore. That would be no one.

The Dolphins currently do not have a back-up or rather a third quarterback on the roster. They have Brandon Doughty, a 2016 7th round pick on the practice squad and he could potentially be activated to back-up Moore. Tight-end Marquise Gray is listed as the emergency quarterback.

Naturally the name Kaepernick comes up within hours of the Dolphins wrapping up their come from behind win on Sunday. Kaepernick is still without a job and he may not get one for a long time if ever. He is reportedly suing the league for collusion which means most teams will immediately disregard him as an option.

In London on Sunday, the Arizona Cardinals lost quarterback Carson Palmer for what could be all year with a broken arm and Kaepernicks name immediately surfaced there as well.

The Dolphins have other options should they want to bring in an outside quarterback for a few weeks. Miami currently has around $1.7 million in cap space according to Overthecap.com. This amount is not enough to bring in Kaepernick and likely not Robert Griffin, III who is also out of work. The more likely options are players like Matt McGloin or Thad Lewis. In other words, the pickings are very slim.

Any player that Miami brings up either from the practice squad, via trade, or from the free agent market will mean that they need to make a roster spot so someone won’t be a Dolphin long.

All of that being said for now we can discard all the talk that will inevitably come regarding Colin Kaepernick. The Dolphins simply don’t have the cap space to add him and that should immediately end all the potential criticism that comes along with his name.
