Adam Gase Isn’t the Enemy
I can’t help but notice the amount of hate – yes – hate that is being shared around the Miami Dolphins and more specifically Adam Gase. To be honest, I don’t use the word hate that much, as it is truly a strong word that requires a serious action to be performed against a set person, basically, there is no coming back from that word.
Trolling social media or news publication sites about the Miami Dolphins and you would think that World War III is upon us. The Dolphins have lost two in a row, and one of their most promising players was traded away two weeks ago for a bag of chips. What does all this drama tell the fans – nothing. To be honest, the Miami Dolphins and specifically Adam Gase, don’t care that you are pissed off, or you want the coach fired, or even to start thinking about using the dreaded word that has haunted this team for years – “another re-build.”
Gase, in my opinion has earned the patience of Dolphin fans. There are many arguments that one can make that would offset the above statement, which can be considered valid, however, those views are clouded based on the current performance of the team. Allow me to explain – the Dolphins are playing their 2nd and 3rd string QB.
To provide evidence of how bad a team performs with their 2nd or 3rd string QB, allow me to present the following:
Indianapolis Colts
Houston Texans
Green Bay Packers
How Andrew Luck took this team to the playoffs is beyond my understanding. The Houston Texans have now turned to Tom Savage. How did that turn out? The Colts, that have one of the worst depth charts actually beat the Texans this past week. The Packer are relying on 5th round draft pick that during his final year at college, led the NCCA in the following categories; fumbles, interceptions and yards lost on sacks.
How did other teams look, with their starting QB on the sidelines this year – 4 Wins. 3 of those Wins are from Case Keenum (Vikings QB) – who is the outlier. Take his three out and you are left with 1 Win.
Sure, there is turmoil and drama for each of those teams, but the Packers and Texans were projected to make the playoffs. Do you hear any mention of O’Brien or McCarthy being on the hot seat for losing their starting QB mid season?
Let’s take this to the next level, Gase, as you remember lost his starting QB week 11 last year, and still led his team to its first wildcard appearance in years. Let’s see how O’Brien or McCarthy do the next few weeks and see if they can accomplish that – my bet is HEEELLLLLLLLLLLLL NO.

Onto Jay Cutler. Yes the Dolphins gave him 10 million fully guaranteed, because he was the best option available at that time. He wasn’t the best option; Ryan Tannehill was and still is. Gase took a gamble on a player, as like all coaches in the NFL, he didn’t want to waste a year. Tanny for all his durability, allowed the fans to ignore the more pressing needs as he disguised those with his skill set. Yes, he was the most sacked QB since joining the league, but everyone thought he held onto the ball too long, or the fact that he couldn’t hit the deep ball – not the fact that he couldn’t make a 5 step read cause the guards playing in front of him sucked. Jay is playing poorly because he doesn’t have the same skill set as Tanny, which is now evident to the entire league.
To be honest, the average timeline to properly asses a coach is three years. We are a year and a half into this and people are asking for a new coach, and new offensive game plan and basically a new leader. Gase, doesn’t deserve that. What he did in first year should allow everyone to take a step back and allow him a chance to see what he can do with his starting QB. There will be a lot of interesting decisions coming up as the year unfolds, but one of them will not be whether the Dolphins need a new head coach.
