Dolphins Need To Shake Up QB Position
The Dolphins quarterback situation is a mess. The three current players that are currently on the depth chart, most likely will not, or better yet, should not be on the roster next year for the Miami Dolphins. So where does that leave the Dolphins, and how can they address the most important position on the field?
Ryan Tannehill is the projected starter for the 2018 season. Just a quick reminder, in case you forgot, Tannehill is out for the season as he once again injured his ACL. That’s two tears in the same ACL and let’s not forget that Ryan is now on the wrong side of 30. Which then leads to the question – can the Dolphins really trust Tannehill to be a 16-game starter next year? The odds are against him. The next part is Ryan’s cap hit – he will cost 17.5 Million against the Dolphins cap next season. That is a lot to assign to a player that hasn’t played a full season, and is coming off two ACL injuries.
The Dolphins could potentially look at this upcoming draft to address and develop another promising quarterback, but realistically, the top two quarterbacks will be off the board before the Dolphins select. As New York Giants, Los Angles Chargers, Indianapolis Colts, Arizona Cardinals, Denver Broncos and the New York Jets all potentially need a quarterback upgrade. The top two quarterbacks, in my opinion, are Josh Rosen From UCLA and Lamar Jackson from Louisville. What the Dolphins shouldn’t do, is trade up. Although, Josh Rosen would look amazing under center next year for Miami, the juice isn’t worth the squeeze.
So where does this leave the Dolphins? As Ryan Tannehill, Jay Cutler and Matt Moore are no longer on the team? The answer is simple – sign Teddy Bridgewater via free agency.

Yes…Teddy Bridgewater. Yes…he’s coming off reconstructive knee surgery, but unlike Tannehill he is entering his prime at 25 years old and will potentially cost less than the 17 million. The Dolphins could offer Teddy an incentive ridden contract, based on games played, front end signing bonus, and a friendly cap number for the next 3 years to see how he feels when he goes under center. The risk can be negated based on the salary structure. The Vikings are allowing him to walk, with zero draft compensation. Furthermore, the Dolphins have Devante Parker, Bridgewater former teammate and personal friend- the two worked out with each other all offseason. You want to motivate your first round pick that some are calling a bust – reunite him with a QB that knows everything about him.
Signing Bridgewater would allow the Dolphins to have a projected starter, they can then look at the draft to look for another QB that they could develop – just in case – Teddy get’s injured and to have a healthy battle during the offseason. The player the Dolphin should target in the 2nd round is Luke Faulk from Washington State.
Faulk is in a pass happy offense. Air Raid – if you remember Mike Leach (who would make for an amazing offensive coordinate, which the Dolphins could potentially be looking for) has been teaching Faulk for the last few years. Faulk progression and QB vision is unique and the reason why he should be considered in the 2nd round.
So, let’s rewind, as there is a lot to digest. The plan for next year, would be to release or trade Ryan Tannehill. Release Jay Cutler and Matt Moore. Sign Teddy Bridgewater and draft Luke Faulk. And hire Mike Leach as the next Dolphins offensive coordinator.
The Dolphins have shed over 30 million in cap space, added a 25 year old QB who has a chip on shoulder and paired him with his college teammate where he put up the best QB statistics in Louisville history, drafted an apparent heir and paired him with his former head coach, and added an offensive coordinator that attacks all aspects of the field, thereby giving new life to a played out playbook.
That is a complete roster over-haul, a shake up to a position that definitely needs it.
