Miami Dolphins have only a few players worthy of Pro-Bowl

When it comes to the NFL Pro-Bowl getting in no longer seems to carry the weight it once did. With voting open for a couple of weeks now, the Miami Dolphins don’t have a lot of players worthy of the nomination.

There was a time when the Pro-Bowl carried more weight with a nomination or rather an election. The game was never really much more than a swan song to the season but over the past few years the game’s decline and players opting to not participate has made the game more of a joke.

To be clear, I do not like the Pro-Bowl and if it went away I would be fine with that.

Forget about potential injuries to players and forget about the dumbed down version that the NFL has instituted over the past decade. The game just isn’t fun to watch and seeing your team helmet on the field doesn’t really mean much these days.

Voting is skewed to say the least. Fans tend to vote for their favorite teams and players tend to vote the same in many cases. Consider the fact that Jay Cutler has his name listed as a quarterback eligible for vote should tell you all you need to know about this system.

When it comes to the Dolphins only a few players stand out as potential additions to the game. Cameron Wake, Jarvis Landry, Kenny Stills, Ndamukong Suh, Reshad Jones, and the list ends there.

Cameron Wake

Wake is not having a Pro-Bowl season. He is playing well but he isn’t better this season than some of the other DE’s in the league. It is not a knock on Wake by any means but should he go to the Pro-Bowl? Probably not this year.

Wake is ranked 20th in sacks this season and while his play on the field has been very solid, there are too many others having a statistically better season and that plays into the equation.

Will he get in? There is still a good chance that Wake makes the game, likely as an alternate. Coaches and players know what Wake is doing and what he can do. With coaches, players, and fans accounting for 1/3 of the vote each, Wake could make it.

Jarvis Landry

Landry is having a typical Landry season and is 4th in the AFC in receptions. He drops way down to 27th in yardage. Landry is a solid bet to make the game. He is well-known and is well-respected by his peers and other coaches. Fans of course like Landry as well.

Landry is the Dolphins best shot for a Pro-Bowl election in 2018. He only lacks the yardage that many look at but his catch totals are impressive.

Will he get in? The odds are yes he will and of all the Dolphins players, Landry probably deserves it the most.

Kenny Stills

Stills is having a good season but he is the opposite of Landry in terms of stats and notoriety. He ranks higher than Landry in yardage but is way off in terms of receptions. Stills doesn’t have the NFL’s attention for voting such as this and frankly there are more obvious options.

Will he get in? No. The chances are very slim but if enough players pull out like they typically do, he may slide in as a late alternative but even that is unlikely.

Reshad Jones

Jones has had Pro-Bowl seasons but this year he isn’t putting up the numbers he had in the past. A slow start to the 2017 season hinders Jones and while he is playing better in recent weeks it will not likely be enough to warrant a spot in the conference vs. conference game.

Will he get in? Hard to say honestly. His reputation and name are enough to get voters to cast them his way but not a first ballot elect. Likely he will get in as an alternate if he does.

Ndamukong Suh

Suh is having a very good season and like Landry represents the best chance for Miami to put someone on the Pro-Bowl roster. Suh has both the name recognition and the play this season to warrant a first ballot spot on the team. While he doesn’t possess the sacks or the tackles statistically, Suh never really has led the league in those areas.

Will he get in? Yes. There is no reason why Suh should not make the Pro-Bowl in the 2018 game.

Michael Thomas

There has been a big push on social media to get Thomas a Special Teams nod to the Pro-Bowl. He is having a very good season for the Dolphins on special teams but when it comes to voting fans outside of Miami won’t know his name and it’s unlikely that there is enough votes by coaches and players to get him elected on the first ballot.

Will he get in? There is a chance he could make it but it is a slim chance at this point.

Dolphins players will suffer in voting because of the season the team has had. Big blowout losses and a couple of shutouts will not help outside of Dolphins fan voting and while that shouldn’t be a reason to not vote, that does tend to be an annual trend.
