The Miami Dolphins have to make a decision on Jarvis Landry this off-season and that decision may be coming to light now rather than later.

According to a report by Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, more on that in a minute, the Dolphins want to keep him long term. If this is true it should eliminate questions about the team keeping their own playmakers. Cost however may be the key.

Salguero said in an article on Thursday that the Dolphins wanted to see “maturity” out of Landry not just catch totals. This season Landry has put points on the board and has become a more rounded receiver.

According to Salguero his Dolphins sources believe that the Dolphins are either getting ready to open talks with Landry’s agent or have already began preliminary talks to keep the start receiver.

"And sources say the team and Landry’s representation are either already in preliminary talks or about to start talks — neither side is comfortable saying which — to discuss contract parameters, with the goal being that it leads to getting the receiver signed beyond this season. – Armando Salguero MiamiHerald.com."

Landry has been the heart and the soul of the offense. He is a big time fan favorite and a player that even has Bill Belichick game planning for him. And Landry still wins the battle. How do you let a player like that walk? You don’t.

Landry wasn’t offered a deal last year and Miami didn’t even talk to him about one. Landry put a self-imposed contract deadline on himself, the start of the 2017 season. He cited the fact he wanted to concentrate on football and not money.

Miami fans won’t likely buy into the talk until that talk produces a contract. For starters we do not know what kind of money Landry will require to remain in Miami. We do not know what monetary value Miami puts on Landry. So while everyone can at least take a breath, this is far from resolved.

Miami paid Kenny Stills giving him an extension and they extended Reshad Jones and gave T.J. McDonald a new deal as well. All the while Landry did not complain, he simply prepared. Don’t think Miami hasn’t noticed.

The next question is if the Dolphins do indeed re-sign Landry what does it mean for DeVante Parker? The Dolphins were very, and by very I mean VERY high on Parker coming out of college. They were absolutely elated when Parker fell to them at 14th overall in the 2015 draft.

Parker has not come anywhere close to a first round grade and his inability to play through minor annoying injuries, is well annoying. Parker is under contract so he won’t go anywhere next season unless the Dolphins decide to trade him which may be a possibility. He has a load of talent but it is unrealized.

For now the news out of Miami is good but until a contract is completed fans will still wonder what could derail those talks.
