The Maimi Dolphins are reportedly in love with Baker Mayfield and may want to jump up to grab the Oklahoma product but they need a partner willing to trade. Is that Denver?

Broncos CEO John Elway spoke to the media at this week owners meeting in Orlando and he told the group of reporters that the Broncos may use the 5th overall pick on a quarterback.

This is nothing new really as the Broncos have always been a favorite to draft a signal caller but after signing Case Keenum to a two year deal in free agency and an investment in cap space, some believe that Denver’s priorities have change to other positions and that quarterback may be a day two or three target now.

So are the Broncos really deciding whether or not they will draft a quarterback? Of course they are but they are also seeing a message to teams like the Dolphins and the Bills. That message is “We know you want a QB so if you want one, you have to trade up with us to get him”.

For Denver it makes a lot of sense. If not quarterback they could go linebacker, defensive line, or offensive line and all three are projected to be there at 11 or 12 where the Bills select. Of course there are no guarantees that the player either team covets will be available when Denver is on the clock.

The Browns, Giants, and Jets all could draft a quarterback in next months draft. With only four quarterbacks expected to be top 10 selections, only one of Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Josh Rosen, and Baker Mayfield will be left if they go 1, 2, 3. Even if two of the four are off the board by number four, teams like Miami and Buffalo or even the Cardinals can be working the phones. Perhaps this John Elway proclamation about drafting a quarterback is that message that their phone will be ready.

A trade up to five could potentially be cheaper as well. If Denver is not sold on a quarterback and wants to move down they may not have but two suitors for the pick. If Denver stays put and passes on a QB that QB could fall to 11 or 12 but each pick after five will become less expensive for the team moving up. Miami could simply say, “this is our best offer take it or leave it”.

The fun part about all of this, or if you prefer, the stressful part of all of this is that there is still a freaking month before we know what exactly is going to happen.
