Why the latest NFLSpinzone mock draft has the Miami Dolphins all wrong
By Brian Miller
There is a lot to love about NFL mock drafts and equally as much to hate. Our sister site NFLSpinzone released their full first round mock today and they blow the Miami Dolphins pick all together.
To sit here and say that the Dolphins draft pick is a waste would kind of be like calling the kettle black. Tomorrow morning my own full first round mock draft will appear and it is likely to have as many holes as swiss cheese and I’m sure that the guy or gal who did this NFLSpinzone mock will be more than happy to jump on here and tell me how much I blew it.
This mock has the Dolphins taking running back Derrius Guice at number 11. That in and of itself is not a big deal. The Dolphins do like some of the running backs in this draft and Guice is one of them. He will be taken in the first round of the draft but likely somewhere in the middle of the first.
So the pick itself isn’t bad it is the fact that they chose a running back over what was on the board.
A running back over Vita Vea o.k. maybe. A running back over Roquan Smith? Highly unlikely. A running back over Josh Rosen? Even more unlikely.
What is even more crazy is that QB Josh Allen is still on the board as well. So who went in the top 10? The Browns took Baker Mayfield at one and while that would make sense, it is highly unlikely that the Browns take a risk on a guy that some think is comparable to Johnny Manziel’s ego. The 2nd pick of the draft? Offensive guard Quentin Nelson. Nelson is a very good prospect but he is not a number two overall prospect and frankly he might not be a top five to top 10 prospect this year. Maybe Denver.

Darnold goes three and then Chubb to the Browns at four where I have only a mild issue on the fact they pass on Saquon Barkley who goes to the Broncos at number five. Six is Denzel Ward and seven has Minkah Fitzpatrick off the board. Eight through nine play out like this. Derwin James, Tremaine Edmunds, and then Harold Landry to Oakland.
While I think Landry goes in the top 20 I’m not sure he goes in the top 10. It is a mock draft so whatever but there are some odd choices at the top of the draft that make for an odd choice at 11 for the Dolphins.
The reality is that the Dolphins have much bigger needs than running back and leaving a potential franchise linebacker on the board like Roquan Smith makes zero sense. Then to have two potential franchise QB’s on the board that Miami passes on is also hard to swallow. Then again, it’s the Dolphins so who knows and if the Dolphins pick Guice at 11 next week, I’m sure NFLSpinzone will be the first to let me know.
