The Miami Dolphins held a pre-draft press meeting yesterday and one of the things that came out of this presser was that they feel they can move up to pick six in round one.

Miami is a heavy favorite to try to move up in the draft to take a quarterback but honestly, this author isn’t buying it. Not a bit, not at all. In fact, after hearing this I immediately realized that the Dolphins have no intention of moving up and likely no intention of drafting a quarterback.

During a pre-draft press conference on Wednesday the Dolphins said they have the ammunition to move up to six but I’m not buying it and in fact, I think we are seeing a big smokescreen.

The reason I believe this is a smokescreen is simple. Why would you let the rest of the NFL know your intentions? There is a few ways to look at this from a draft perspective.

1: The Dolphins said they can move up to six if there is someone they like, presumably a quarterback in an effort to force the hands of a team like the Bills and the Cardinals who could potentially move ahead of Miami.

This makes sense if the Dolphins are hoping a non-quarterback drops to them. By taking another quarterback off the board at six, that is one more player that could potentially fall to Miami.

2: The Dolphins believe they can trade up more than the six spot but telling teams that they can get to six might keep a team like Buffalo from trying to get in front of the six spot or perhaps five.

Consider this, if the Dolphins believe that Baker Mayfield is the best player in this draft and are willing to part with the draft picks necessary to say move up to number two you don’t tell the league you can move up to two, you lie. You say you can move up to six hoping that a team like the Bills buy into it and don’t make a stronger attempt to get to two.

This is a little much to swallow and frankly the first option is far more reasonable.

3: The Dolphins actually are trying to get up to six if one of their top players are on the board. They already know that the Colts are willing to move back but again the issue for me is why tell anyone? Why make it public at all?

Discussions between the two clubs has been rumored for the last two weeks so maybe that helps sell the option to the media and thus the other teams in the league.

In reality there is no reason that the Dolphins should have said anything specific at all. No one believes them anyways. Perhaps that in and of itself is the con from all of this. No one believes them at all so why not simply tell the truth.

Ah, the NFL Draft. Gotta love it.
