The Miami Dolphins have been a central team discussed when the quarterback position in this years draft is mentioned and they may get their man.

If the Miami Dolphins do indeed covet a quarterback there is a good chance that one will be available to them. They may have to trade up to get one but maybe not as far as people think.

Rumors about the NFL Draft seem to change by the hour and it will only get worse as the draft goes from a few days to two days to one day to hours. Everything is obviously predicated on what the teams in front of Miami will do. Here is a quick look at why I believe a quarterback will be in play for Miami.

The top five picks will likely see three quarterbacks come off the board and we can safely say that those three will be three of Josh Allen, Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold, and Baker Mayfield. Two teams are guaranteed to take quarterbacks. The Browns at one or four and the Jets at three. What we don’t know is who will also draft a quarterback.

The Broncos hold the fifth pick and have said that they are willing to trade out of that spot. Some believe the cost will not be as high as expected given the depth in rounds two, three, and four and others think that the Broncos are targeting a player they can get at 11 or 12. So let’s assume that the Bills land in the 5th spot. It’s not unlikely. The Broncos will probably ask for both first round picks and will probably get them.

This entire possibility is dependant on one team. The New York Giants at pick two. The Giants haven’t been rumored much to want to trade out of the 2nd spot but they are apparently leaning away from quarterback. If they stay put and do not draft a QB then two of the above mentioned four will be available at five.

This is important because what happens at five will dictate what is on the board for the Dolphins. If the Giants pass then the draft will go QB, other, QB, other (the Browns hold the 4th pick), and that brings up the Broncos and more likely the Bills who will draft a QB. So again, three of the top four QB’s are off the board.

It will get more interesting at pick six where the Dolphins believe they can move up to but the Cardinals and the Patriots can’t be discounted either. From pick six to pick 10, any team could be a trade partner for a team looking to move up for a quarterback and that includes the Dolphins. If the Colts stay put, they won’t draft a QB and neither will Chicago, San Francisco, Tampa Bay, and Oakland Raiders.

A quarterback falls to Miami at 11.

Again this predicated on the notion that a team, or even the Dolphins, don’t move up for one which is a big possibility. As it stands, the question is what QB might fall? Sam Darnold could drop from one overall to three overall if not taken by the Brown or Giants. Josh Allen could be the odd man out or it could be Josh Rosen. The one player who is not expected to make it past five is Baker Mayfield and he and Darnold are the only two quarterbacks without doubt of falling out of the top five.

While it is still hard to predict, the Dolphins are very much in play for a quarterback provided the Giants pass on a signal caller at pick two. Come draft day, that is the first selection to watch as the dominos will fall from there. If the Giants draft a quarterback, Miami isn’t likely to have the “capital” to move up.
