Miami Dolphins sign 11th overall pick Minkah Fitzpatrick

The Miami Dolphins got extra money on Friday and immediately took to spending it. They signed their first round pick Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Minkah Fitzpatrick, the Miami Dolphins 11th overall pick in April’s draft, is the first to sign from the Dolphins rookie class. The rest should follow soon.

His rookie deal is reported to be a four year deal worth $16.4 million. He will receiver a $10 million signing bonus. The four year deals are standard for all first round draft picks under the current CBA. Teams have a 5th year option that they can “pick-up” after the third year. It is non-binding but is fully guaranteed in case of injury.

Fitzpatrick has participated in all of the Dolphins off-season work so far and teammates have been impressed with how he is picking up the defense. The former Alabama standout is expected to play a big role in the Dolphins defense this year.

Last season Fitzpatrick completed a rare collegiate feat when he was awarded the Jim Thorpe Award, the best corner in college, and the Chuck Bednarik award for the best defensive player in college.  Fitzpatrick is only the third player in college football history to win both awards in the same year.

Charles Woodson won the awards in 1997 and in 2010 Patrick Peterson won both awards. Does that mean that Fitzpatrick will find the same success at the NFL level? No of course not but it is a good omen. The Dolphins obviously believe he will be that good.

For now it’s a wait and see as the off-season continues to move along at a snails pace but when training camp arrives, we will get our first views of Fitzpatrick when the practices move to full contact.
