The Miami Dolphins on Friday received a $17 million addition to their cap space and used some of that on nickel corner Bobby McCain.

Bobby McCain’s new four-year extension is the highest contract paid to a nickel corner in the history of the NFL. McCain’s deal is four years $27 million with $13 million guaranteed. The exact structure of the deal isn’t known just yet.

McCain would have been a free agent at the end of the 2018 season. Drafted in the 5th round of the 2015 draft, McCain has developed into one of the Dolphins better cornerbacks.

Miami is showing more committment to their draft picks, which ideally is how you build a competitive team. While the approach is supposed to be common, the reality is Miami hasn’t shown a lot of commitment to their own drafted players over the last decade. That however has started changing over the last several years.

The Dolphins are investing a lot in their secondary where they are excited about the jump by Xavien Howard last season and the development of Cordrea Tankersley. Add into that mix Reshad Jones and first round draft pick Minkah Fitzpatrick and the Dolphins secondary could be one of the best in the league in the next year or two.

In his three seasons with the Dolphins McCain has started 19 games. He has 91 tackles and 17 passes defensed with three interceptions. McCain not only fills a need but he is a valued leader in the locker room and fits the Adam Gase profile of what he wants his football players to be and he continues to improve.
