Recap of Miami Dolphins preseason after three games
The Miami Dolphins preseason rolled right along and with just one more left to play here is what we know so far.
This will only cover the first three Miami Dolphins games since the last one has yet to be played.
The first half of preseason games left most fans divided on how the team did. Fans are impatient and want to see high scoring affairs. They want to see these new weapons on offense unleashed. However coach Gase had other ideas by keeping a lid on it while doing things like having Mike Gesicki on blocking assignments and running a draw play on long yardage with goal to go due to penalties. My take was Gase was mainly focused on getting the hurry up down game one than incorporating it game two.
There was a fair amount of doom and gloom coming from social media and even from a handful of local media types. The main complaints coming from poor third-down and red-zone situations that both failed game two. I don’t think a third down was converted by the first team offense and there was no scoring aside from field goals. Of course a third complaint/concern penalties sprinkled with a few negative plays was the culprit of the first two. (8 penalties for 69 yards)
Jerome Baker looked good game one and bad game two. Raekwon McMillan also looked bad both games but showed some good work as well. Coach Gase backed him up saying he is progressing. He does look like he is adjusting to what comes down to his rookie year as he missed all of last season to injury.
David Fales also looked good game one than bad game two. Cordrea Tankersley: I thought Tank played like trash he was getting burned and picked on game two. After the game he even used the same terms saying so himself. The play of the DT, CB and QB were all up for grabs heading in to game three as no one is reaching out to claim it. Where there is tight competition is at kicker, undrafted rookie Greg Joseph made a FG of 54 yards and evened things out with seventh-round pick Jason Sanders.
Kenyan Drake busted a run for 34 yards game two which can almost be expected of him most times. Although some in the national media still seem to not know he is a stalwart player. He finished six for fifty-four yards. Robert Quinn stood out with two sacks game two but graded low with Pro Football Focus due to poor defense of the run. Xavien Howard had a nice interception were he got into zone and the QB never saw him.

DeVante Parker should miss all of preseason with a broken finger. Kenny Stills also was injured game one and missed game two which opened more playing time for Albert Wilson and Jakeem Grant. They both looked good, Grant was the leading receiver that game 4 for 45 and Wilson played all over while slipping tackles nicely, although Gase went way vanilla as he alluded to after the game in the press conference.
Game 3: The Ravens rested all their starters, so the scoring drive with Danny Amendola is somewhat tainted. And Jakeem Grant got a concussion during said drive when he got a helmet to helmet hit after catching a pass and going down from being tackled. According to Adam Beasley the situation looked worse than the first appearance and there is a good chance he will be ready to start the season.

This play seemed to spark the drive. Kenyan Drake busts a run for 32 yards.

Danny Amendola takes a short pass and turns it into a 16 yard score.
Some stats from some starters at half time.
Ryan Tannehill: 11-16, 115 yds, TD, 110.2 rating, 2 sacks, 2 fumbles.
Kenyan Drake: 4 car, 32 yds; 1 rec, 36 yds.
Danny Amendola: 2 rec, 23 yds, TD
Robert Quinn/Jordan Phillips: 1 sack apiece.
Kiko Alonso/T.J. McDonald: 7 tackles each.
The starting units did not appear to play after the fist half.
The defense had trouble containing the Ravens running QB’s. Griffin had a big gain and Jackson ran one in from near the red zone. Jackson also had a passing TD.
Bubble player safety Maurice Smith who had a team-high 40 snaps against Carolina, made eight tackles, picked off a pass and allowed eight yards in coverage last game was hurt this time late in the last quarter defending a play in the end zone. He did walk off. He also shared a sack with Vincent Taylor who blocked a FG himself.
David Fales or Brock Osweiler don’t seem like they want to show they belong on this roster as the backup QBs. They both played the whole second half doing next to nothing aside from throwing interceptions.
The hurry up offense petered out as the preseason games went on and it doesn’t look like it will take hold from what is on tape. There could be elements of it but from what I saw it won’t be as advertised with the Space Balls “ludicrous speed” movie reference.
Final score Ravens 27 Miami Dolphins 10 (not that it matters much).
The final cut down for players will be done all at once so it might have more meaning for the fourth preseason game.
Lastly Mike Gesicki got wide open catching a pass during the first (and only) TD scoring drive the first half in which the starters played.
