Miami Dolphins have rich history against the Oakland Raiders
By Brian Miller
Whether the Miami Dolphins are playing the Oakland Raiders, Los Angeles Raiders, or in a few years the Las Vegas Raiders, their history is a rich one.
On Sunday the Miami Dolphins will host the Raiders for what will be the 38th time in the clubs histories. The Raiders currently lead the series 20-17-1 with the lone tie coming in 1969 in a game played at the Orange Bowl in Miami.
Over the years the teams have played only two overtime games. The tied game and in 1994 when the Dolphins beat the Raiders 20-17 as the Los Angeles Raiders.
The Raiders have shut out the Dolphins one time in their history. That game was in 2001 when Miami lost 27-0 in Oakland. Through the years the Dolphins have held the Raiders below ten points just three times while the Raiders have held the Dolphins below ten four times.
The two teams have met in the post-season four times. In 1970 the Dolphins lost to the Raiders 21-14 but would rebound the following year and make the Super Bowl against the Dallas Cowboys. In 1973 the two clubs would meet in the AFC Championship game where the Dolphins won 27-10.

The following year marked the end of the Dolphins dominance in the AFC as they lost to the Raiders in what became known as the “Sea of Hands” game. A last-minute flailing attempt by then quarterback Kenny Stabler found his receiver through a group of Dolphins defenders to send Miami home without a chance for a fourth consecutive Super Bowl.
In 2001 the clubs met for the final time in the post-season with the Raiders shutting out Miami 27-0.
The last time the two teams met was last season in Miami when the Jay Cutler led Dolphins offense lost 27-24. Prior to that game the Dolphins had won five consecutive games against the Raiders and eight of the previous nine games.
Oakland comes to Miami struggling on both sides of the ball. Their offense despite the talents of Derek Carr, Amari Cooper, Jared Cook, and Marshawn Lynch have not found the rhythm that new head coach Jon Gruden had expected.
This weekends game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. kick-off.
