The Miami Dolphins have a problem related to Ryan Tannehill and it goes far beyond missing another game this week.

It has been announced that the Miami Dolphins will be without Ryan Tannehill once again this week as the team faces division rival New York Jets on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium. It will be the fourth game of the year started by Brock Osweiler.

This was supposed to be Tannehill’s comeback year after missing all of last season and the final month of 2016 with a knee injury. This year it’s his shoulder and no one apparently knows what exactly the problem is.

The latest news on Tannehill is anything but positive. His velocity and strength are issues and it was reported by local media that he is only able to throw about seven yards. In all likelihood Tannehill will be out the next two games. With the bye week still ahead there will be three weeks that Tannehill can try to get back on the field.

If he doesn’t, there will be a lot of questions about his future.

Tannehill is scheduled to count $26 million in cap space in 2019. Releasing him will save almost $9 million of cap space. Will the Dolphins part ways with a quarterback who has shown the ability to only be slightly above average? It is a trend that is troubling.

The Dolphins should be realizing that extending players or keeping players a year later than they should is costing the team progress. At some point hard decisions need to be made and there simply is not enough tape to warrant keeping Tannehill at $26 million.

If there is good news it’s that there is still a lot of season left and Tannehill could make it back onto the field for the stretch and who knows maybe takes them to the post-season. In that scenario the Dolphins will not simply cut ties with him but if he can’t get back on the field or struggles when he does, Miami has to look elsewhere but honestly I’m not sure they will simply turn away from him.

Adam Gase loves Tannehill and the Dolphins do as  well. He does everything that is asked of him but unfortunately he can no longer do it above average consistently. Is that worth risking another year or two on? Maybe even the coaching jobs of the team?

While 2019 is going to be a pivotal year for Adam Gase the off-season is going to be interesting for Ryan Tannehill especially if he can not make it back on the field in 2018.
