Miami Dolphins better served looking outside of Senior Bowl QB’s
By Shawn Digity
The Senior Bowl boasts some big name quarterbacks but the Miami Dolphins may be better served looking for outside suitors.
Some of the biggest quarterback names are in Mobile for the Senior Bowl. I’ve ran into the ground the notion of the Miami Dolphins desperately needing their QB of the future, or even a bridge quarterback. So it makes sense to look at Saturday’s Senior Bowl roster for the next big thing, but I’m not so sure it is really in the Dolphins’ best interest.
I’ve stated my lofty goals for the Dolphins’ quarterback quandary. I mentioned the “tanking” for Tua motion and the Kyler Murray trade-up idea. So what other reasonable options remain? The Dolphins are faced with a sticky situation at the moment.
There are some decent free agent quarterbacks that will be available in March, such as Teddy Bridgewater. There will also be some less-than-decent FA options, Nick Foles namely. Even if either of those two suit up in orange and aqua it will be a short stint and would likely be to put on a front for the behind-the-scenes rebuild.
Part of me wishes that the Miami Dolphins will sign Ryan Fitzpatrick, who’s going to be a free agent, so we, as fans, get a third transcendental season in a row after the short-but-sweet Jay Cutler and Brock Osweiler eras. FitzMagic for the Dolphins would be extremely fun for a week or two.
Back to the Senior Bowl, there are already some household names on both the North and South rosters that will be selected all throughout the Draft. I wouldn’t be surprised to see any one of them on the Miami Dolphins roster, but I’m not totally convinced any would be viewed as the long term answer.
There’s potential first-rounder Daniel Jones from Duke, the magnificently mustachioed Cougar Gardner Minshew, the Florida Gator-turned Mountaineer Will Grier, the MAC standout Tyree Jackson from Buffalo, the enigmatic SEC helmsman Jarrett Stidham from Auburn, the Baker Mayfield lite Trace McSorley from Penn State, the big-armed Drew Lock from Missouri and, I’m out of cheesy superlatives, but the last guy is Ryan Finley from NC State.
More from Phin Phanatic
- Tua Tagovailoa practicing with teammates is everything a leader does
- 4 offensive tackles Miami Dolphins could draft at 51
- Miami Dolphins don’t need CB help but these 5 could be available at 51
- 4 players that could replace Wilkins if Miami Dolphins don’t re-sign him
- Miami Dolphins have a starting point with Wilkins after Simmons deal
There’s a lot of star power there, at least in college, but none of them scream “savior of a franchise”. There’s a lot to like about Drew Lock and I’m sure I could be talked into liking him more. I’ve been cooling on Will Grier after initially liking him a lot in the 2018 season.
Jarrett Stidham is the real wild card of this group. I’ve written about him before after he declared, and he’s been polarizing on Draft Twitter; people either love his tools or hate his film. There are credible arguments for both sides. I wouldn’t mind taking him if the price is right, but he’s a developmental guy, for sure.
I’m out on Daniel Jones and Ryan Finley, but I do like Tyree Jackson and Gardner Minshew. They’re mid-round guys with a lot of upside and, best case scenario, could be become fun starters. I don’t have an opinion on Trace McSorley.
The Senior Bowl is on Saturday, January 26 at 1:30 p.m. CT and will be a great way for these guys to showcase their talents and bump up their draft stock. If I’m making a wild, baseless prediction, I’m going to say that Jarrett Stidham and Tyree Jackson have the best days and will subsequently be the best options if the Dolphins choose to address the quarterback problem in the 2019 Draft.
