Brian Flores is coming to Miami but hold the enthusiasm at least a little
By Brian Miller
The days of Brian Flores as the Miami Dolphins head coach is about to start and a lot of fans are excited about what he might bring to the Dolphins.
If you have watched the Patriots defense this post-season you will have noticed a stifling front that gets pressure and can stop the run. You will also know that Brian Flores was the conductor of that orchestra. On Sunday, his masterpiece was completed holding the number two offense in the NFL to three points.
Tony Romo called many plays last night “Belichick specials” and yes those plays were likely designed by Bill Belichick but they were called by Brian Flores. Now fans want that same shattering defense they saw on display last night.
The enthusiasm is high but it should be a lot lower at least tempered.
Brian Flores has a swagger to him and a hand full of Super Bowl rings but he also has never been a head coach and while that may seem like it’s not a big deal, he is going to have to manage the game on both sides of the ball. He is going to have to lead men and coaches. Each week he will need to design and implement game plans and schemes and then learn to adjust them during a game.
And he has to do all of it with less talent and inexperienced assistant coaches. Last nights brilliant showing by the Patriots defense was impressive but if you think that in 2019 or even in 2020 that is what you are going to see in Miami, you are not thinking clearly.
Over the last month I have softened on the idea of Flores. Out of the gate I wasn’t thrilled but there is potential with him. He seems as though he may have really learned what Bill Belichick has been preaching but he has to put it into motion.
There will be no “ace” general manager to guide him along as Chris Grier is only now taking the full reigns of his job without needing to go to someone else first. On top of it all the Dolphins don’t have a quarterback and are missing offensive lineman.

Miami has a lot of work to do and will need a couple of seasons to sort it out. That could be good for Flores who will arrive to a situation that will allow him to hit the head coaching bumps without the need to immediately win. Flores’ growing pains should go hand in hand with the Dolphins own re-building plan.
Hopefully when the re-build is about over and the team is ready to start competing, Brian Flores will have moved on from the inexperienced mistakes he will make and together the team can grow.
All of that being said, if Chris Grier can find the right players to fit that style of defense the Miami fan base is going to be ecstatic.
