The Miami Dolphins fanbase will never admit it because rooting for the New England Patriots to win anything is just simply wrong. But they did. Sort of.

When the Patriots faced the Chargers in the divisional round fans prayed that the Chargers would slaughter the Patriots. That didn’t happen because Brian Flores shut them down. When the Patriots faced the Chiefs in the AFC Championship game, fans wanted the Patriots to get destroyed and that too didn’t happen because, in part, of Brian Flores.

The Patriots advanced to the Super Bowl and no Miami Dolphins fan will openly admit to rooting for the Patriots and in reality, none of the truly did. What they did wish for was a loss by New England due to Tom Brady. What they didn’t want was their next head coach to get embarrassed. He didn’t.

When the game was over many in the NFL believe the real MVP of the Super Bowl was new Dolphins head coach Brian Flores who called the absolute perfect game. It was a two out 9th inning no-hitter that got lost on a bunt. The Rams were the big offensive bad ass of the NFL this year and Flores held them to just three points.

The Patriot offense could do nothing and the only thing that would have made last nights game absolutely perfect was if the Rams intercepted Tom Brady and scored a touchdown on the INT and then won the game.

What I’m saying is no one wanted the Patriots to win but no Dolphins fans wanted Flores to fail. The fact that he did not was extremely exciting. During the Chargers game I spoke with someone from the Dolphins who said he was finding it hard to root against the Patriots when the Dolphins head coach was coaching the defense. It was true. Rooting against Flores felt wrong but right because of the logo he wore on his shirt.

In the history of the NFL no coach has called a better game than Brian Flores defensively. You could argue that Dallas did in Super Bowl VI when they held a very young Miami Dolphins team to three points but the Dolphins were not an explosive offensive team. The Rams were.

Sean McVay has been heralded as the second coming of Bill Belichick and the biggest jokes have surrounded other coaches who have come into contact with him. “Oh, there is the next best coach because he shook McVay’s hand’. Brian Flores put a stop to that.

No one knows how Flores will fare in Miami but there is an optimism surrounding him that wasn’t present a month ago and after last nights destruction of the Rams offense and Sean McVay it is reaching an almost fever level.

If this works with Flores credit has to go to Chris Grier who singled him out and made the decision to bypass other coaches with more experience in the position. This may all fall flat because the Dolphins have a lot of work to do but for now, it’s comforting to know that the man taking over this team could call such a perfect game. And that is why rooting for and against New England felt so cheaply satisfying even though we all still wish they would have lost.
