Brian Flores is the new Miami Dolphins head coach and it was a shared vision for the future that convinced him that the job with the Dolphins was the right one.

When Flores was introduced and questioned on Monday he said that there was never a timetable for becoming a head coach. He was in no rush. He did however feel that the Miami Dolphins were the right fit, the right place for him to go to. Why?

Why would a 15 year New England Patriot veteran coach view the Miami Dolphins who they have whipped almost annually be the right fit for that coach? Why would the Miami Dolphins who have no quarterback and heading towards a re-build be the right time for Brian Flores? He says it is a shared vision.

(What specifically in your meeting with the Dolphins, told you this was the place for you?)

"– “Chris (Grier) mentioned it. I think our vision and our core beliefs and our core philosophy of how to build a team, they were aligned. That was one of the things for me, going through the process of interviewing. I told every team this – if our beliefs aren’t aligned, then don’t hire me, because if they’re not aligned, then it’s not going to work. If they’re not aligned, it doesn’t work.” – MiamiDolphins.com"

Apparently the Dolphins and Brian Flores have a shared and aligned vision of core beliefs. Now comes the hard part. Putting those values and beliefs into action. In a way Flores fits with Miami as much as Miami fits for Flores.

Flores is getting a chance to not only be a head coach in the NFL but he is doing so with what could be a clean slate. While the Dolphins turn over their roster and re-build expectations will be low and during that time Flores will have the time to learn to be a head coach without the expectations of winning now.

When Adam Gase took over the Dolphins roster there were holes but there were also pieces. There was however no shared vision between Gase and Tannenbaum and Grier. There was no clear idea of what direction the team was moving. Gase wants this guy go get him, Tannenbaum wants this guy make him fit. Chris Grier mediate any problems.

While Gase found success in his first season the winning only masked the issues with the roster and the holes showed clearly in 2017. The Dolphins are hoping to avoid a repeat of that as they rebuild this years roster.

Interestingly enough the Dolphins have only undergone even close to a re-build three times before. Once when Jimmy Johnson took over for Don Shula and that was relatively more or less theory than personnel. In 2005 with Nick Saban who basically gutted the team due to salary cap issues, and under Bill Parcells in his first season when there was nothing in place after the Cam Cameron debacle in 2007.

Chris Grier is getting his first chance to run an organization without interference and he has hired his own head coach and will get to hire not inherit his own quarterback. Brian Flores gets to work with a young creative general manager who he has known for years and he too gets to start with a new quarterback in the next year or two while molding a roster to fit his vision.

Like everything there is no guarantees in life but this is a unique situation for a general manager, head coach, quarterback, and a team that is re-building it’s roster to find success together. And if it doesn’t work out, they will fail together.
