What should be the top trait for the next Miami Dolphins quarterback?

The off-season is good for playing guessing games and trying to see ahead for what might happen. This is the latest exercise I have been playing with.

First try to see what the next QB would be working with. He would have some speedy talent with WR’s Jakeem Grant, Albert Wilson and RB Kenyan Drake. However to utilize that talent properly it would be a big help to have a line to play behind. This has been a negative consistent in this factoring going back long before this season. It is easy to assume that will continue.

What the culture will be should also be factored. If we want to take owner Ross at his word with going young we can also assume the older players will not be returning. Will that be some older players? Most older players? It’s hard to tell. And what will be the cut off age? 30? Also hard to tell. Will some exceptions be made on this? The two highest grades PFF had on offense and defense were both older players with Frank Gore (age 35 years) and Cameron Wake (age 37 years)

It could be Ross meant that for new signings of FA’s after getting burned some this last season namely with guard Josh Sitton (age 32 years) who started and played in just the first game. Most of last seasons starters that played the interior line were over 30 leaving only tackles Laremy Tunsil and Ja’Wuan James. Considering this last season was the first in ages the Dolphins addressed the guard spot with someone prominent it is looking rather dire bad luck aside.

With PFF rating the o-line next to last for most of last season with the Cards being last (Josh Rosen trade anyone) and the situation at hand with no ready answers outside of the two tackles. There is no reason to project this line getting much better. And if this will be the case give me the QB with a quick release under pressure. Hopefully this next coaching staff will allow for a lot of hot routes. Because these two things in tandem are the only things that have any entertaining value on the way to a losing season.

And If the older players get moved than maybe there is something to losing more this coming season despite what Grier said.

Other off-season thoughts:

I like the idea of getting Pats players like Flowers, Hightower is said to be a possibility with not wanting to take a pay cut. It might be worth it to pay extra for that familiarity and have the new coaches and players get a step ahead to start off. Players are going to need to be added anyway from cuts coming and besides knowing the system it might free up things in the draft. By not being locked in on defense early it frees up being able to possibly trade down and maybe be in a better spot for the QB’s that are left. Or even take a fluke falling player. A lot of time in recent drafts QB’s that most say should be there day two or three go late first round early second. There is a glut at the position.

If James and Howard get resigned top dollar will have to be paid it is just a skill pay level thing. At least there will be the extra ten Million cap growth this season and also a second ten million carryover from last season. Also money could be saved playing past years draft classes more or practice squad players or even undrafted left overs.

Everyone went nuts over combine results of WR D.K. Metcalf 6-foot-3, 228-pound wide receiver from Ole Miss who ran the 40-yard dash in 4.33 seconds on Saturday. The Dolphins have a player in Kalen Ballage who at 6-2, 228lbs ran his 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds although he is a RB. The Dolphins have a nice base of very speedy players and adding to it might not be all bad. I’m not saying get Metcalf but he is a good example of size and speed which should be sought after.

More speed from the combine on Sunday: Mississippi State’s 6-foot-6, 260-pound DE Montez Sweat ran his 40 (fastest ever) in 4.41 seconds. Which is faster than these prominent WR’s Amari Cooper 4.42 Julio Jones 4.42 Odell Beckham Jr. 4.43 A.J. Green 4.49 Michael Thomas 4.57 Antonio Brown 4.57. He would be more what the Dolphins would be looking for. And with his bump he will probably get from this result averaged to where he already was projected the stars might align and he could fall into the early round picks the Dolphins have or could have. The Dolphins did meet with him.

There is a lot on Ryan Tannehill and potentially trading him. However it looks like a certain Miami sports writer whose nickname rhymes with Blando may have gotten the amount a team needs to pay him wrong. It looks like from what I heard he used the total cap number and neglected the guaranteed money that the Miami Dolphins are on the hook with him no matter what happens.
Guaranteed money stays with the team not the player. This is why you have ‘diva receivers’ if they would want to force a trade. The restructure of Ryan that was good to help keep Suh is not looking so good now.
