The Miami Dolphins wanted to trade Ryan Tannehill. They won’t now as the market is all but dried up after Case Keenum was traded.

Ryan Tannehill is not likely going to be a starter in 2019 unless injuries hit a franchise or he beats out a rookie if that is where he lands. The best chance was with the Washington Redskins but on Thursday the Redskins traded for Case Keenum.

The trade was not a big deal for the Redskins. They will receive Keenum and a 7th round pick from the Broncos and Denver will receive a 6th round draft pick. Late last month the Broncos traded a 4th round pick to the Ravens for Joe Flacco. What does this say about Tannehill?

NFL teams know that Tannehill is going to likely hit the open market but so was Keenum and maybe even Flacco. While Tannehill’s salary is a bit more the other two salaries are not that far off from his. So what is the deal? Proven talent.

Keenum had a good run for one season with the Vikings that prompted the Broncos to trade for him last year. After one season the Broncos had seen enough. Flacco was on the outs in Baltimore after Lamar Jackson took over as the starter.

Flacco has been on a down-slide and is at the end of his career but Tannehill is only seven years into his and has plenty of years left in him. His shoulder injury wasn’t serious enough in 2018 to keep him off the roster all season and his knee injury was clearly healed. That means that Tannehill’s upside and that “ceiling” Adam Gase talked about isn’t all that impressive.

Tannehill’s options are going to be limited with perhaps the Raiders should they move on from Derek Carr as the only realistic spot he could end up in but the Raiders could also go QB in the draft and start that guy.

Any trade value which was already considered to be next to nothing is all but gone now. Maybe Miami can work a deal for a player or a swap of draft picks in a given round. Other than that their only other option outside of release would be to redo his contract with Tannehill taking a pay cut but it is unlikely he would agree to that given the amount of money he will still make from the Dolphins if released.
