Miami Dolphins don’t need a veteran quarterback to lead them in 2019

The Miami Dolphins have two quarterbacks on their roster as of today. Jake Ruddock and Luke Falk. They should bring back David Fales and call it a day.

When it comes to the Miami Dolphins quarterback situation no one quite knows what they are going to do. They pursued, briefly, Teddy Bridgewater. They were reportedly interested in Tyrod Taylor. There has been speculation that they will talk with Blake Bortles.

Let’s be clear here. The Miami Dolphins have an open starting quarterback job. Bridgewater opted to stay in New Orleans for less money to be the back-up. Taylor opted to back up Phillip Rivers in San Diego and Blake Bortles is set to meet with the L.A. Rams to be Jared Goff’s back-up.

Let that sink in for a minute and then ask yourself why no one wants to come to Miami?

The answer is very simple. No quarterback coming to Miami is going to be a long-term solution. At best they get two years but even if they perform well they still only get two years. The Dolphins will draft their future quarterback in 2019 or 2020. Whomever comes to South Florida is a bridge. A caretaker to a job that has no future with Miami and frankly, little chance to showcase to other teams they are worth a starting job.

Bortles failed as a starter in Jacksonville. Taylor did the same in Buffalo and Bridgewater’s knee injury derailed a promising career. His decision is the oddest of the three. In Miami he would have been able to sell his future but opted to bank on his future in New Orleans instead.

This is where David Fales, Ruddock, and Falk come in. Open the competition and let one of them take over. At worst you finish dead last in the league which is probably what you want for 2020’s draft position. At best you find a quarterback that shows leadership ability and growth throughout the season. In that case you have a starter for 2020 while the rookie learns.

You also save a ton of money as you revamp the offensive line and retool the defensive unit. In reality starting any of those three would be like starting a rookie without the pedigree. For a team that want’s to be in position to draft a quarterback in 2020 or take a flyer if one drops to 13 in 2019, those three offer your best option to fail in order to succeed or succeed and be surprised.

Falk was never given a chance by Adam Gase but he liked what he saw in him out of college. So much so that he kept four quarterbacks on the roster last year until he could stash Falk on IR with a thumb injury. Fales has potential but to what limit is not known because he has only played a handful of plays. Ruddock?

Ruddock has three years of NFL experience but those were as a back-up to Matt Stafford. He has one game of experience that was three completions on five attempts for 24 yards and one interception.

For the Dolphins 2019 is all about re-building so adding a veteran quarterback doesn’t makes sense unless they plan on a rookie being on the roster in 2019 as well. If that is the case players like Bortles, Bridgewater, and Taylor wouldn’t make sense as they were never really that good to begin with or in the case of Bridgewater experienced.

This is going to be a tough season for the Dolphins and the off-season hasn’t been easy so far either. Miami is a team in transition and while QB is the most important position on the field, this year it very well may be the least important.

Miami will make a decision and it is very unlikely that they do not add a veteran quarterback. If they plan to draft a QB this year then adding a Ryan Fitzpatrick would make more sense as he has at least demonstrated a clearer knowledge of the game through his years of NFL experience. If they are going to wait until 2020, maybe give the trio a shot to compete and see if you have a diamond under all that unpolished rock.
