Miami Dolphins fans should start thinking Dwayne Haskins

The Miami Dolphins want and need a quarterback but many believe they will wait until 2020. Dwayne Haskins may have something to say about that.

When the Miami Dolphins draft next month, there will be a lot of speculation about who they will select but the one name that continues to gain popularity is Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins. Fans, it may be time to start thinking this might happen.

For the record, I’m not on that wagon and remain firmly on the 2020 wagon for Oregon’s Justin Herbert. I don’t run the Dolphins as many of you point out quite consistently in the comments with “thank God you don’t run the Dolphins”. See I read. Haskins is not my kind of QB but he might very well be the Dolphins.

There is a lot of speculation that the signing of Ryan Fitzpatrick is to help bridge a 2019 quarterback to the 2020 season. Fitzpatrick is a pocket passer which many point to as a reason Kyler Murray would not be a fit. Haskins is a pocket passer so naturally his name is being mentioned quite often.

The question of course is will he be there when Miami selects at 13 or will they need to move up?

There is growing speculation that quarterbacks could fall this year. A recent mock draft conducted on Sirius XM radio’s NFL channel had the Cardinals passing on Murray after trying to drum interest in trading the pick. This is a growing sentiment regarding Murray and the Cardinals.

If the Cardinals do in fact pass on Murray and no one trades up with Arizona to get him, things are going to shake-up differently. The next two teams, 49’ers and Jets do not need a quarterback and the Raiders are not expected to draft one at the 4th spot.

The Giants at pick six could go quarterback but they seem to be convinced they can milk another two or maybe even three years out of Eli Manning. The trade of Odell Beckham, Jr. seems to support that thought process. If that is true, the Giants are likely going to go defense with their first of two first round picks.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are also a logical landing spot for a quarterback but they have Nick Foles now making a QB in 2019 not as important. The Jaguars could wait until 2020 or even 2021 to get a QB but the popular opinion is that they wait until 2020.

The Lions and Bills are not going to draft a quarterback in round one this year which means the next team up is the Broncos at 10. With Murray, Haskins, and Drew Lock still on the board, the Broncos would be hard pressed to pass on a QB. Many believe they really like Lock.

Lock is a gunslinger type QB who has a good arm but can sometimes make bad decisions with the football. Can they coach him out of that? Maybe. John Elway may certainly think so.

After the 10th pick the Bengals are the only other team likely to take a quarterback but even that is a remote possibility this year. More likely is a team like the Giants trading up from 17 or the Redskins trading up from 15.

If the draft plays out like this, the Dolphins could have the option of both Murray and Haskins and many believe that the Dolphins like the intelligence of Haskins far more than the athleticism of Murray.

Haskins had a very good 2018 season at Ohio State and while he only has one year of starting experience, he has played over his career with the Buckeyes. Haskins has gone from a likely number one overall pick to a guaranteed top five but as the draft inches closer many believe that teams they thought would target a QB may no longer be looking at that as a major need early.

Mock drafts are still all over the place but Haskins continues to slide in many of them. It may be time to start wrapping our heads around the possibility that Haskins could be there at 13. For some of the Dolphins fans, it would be met with clapping hands while others, not so much.
